W Hotels has sponsored one of two IMOCA Open 60 yachts, which will compete in the NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record, a competition to set a sailing record between New York and Barcelona as well as to strengthen bonds between both cities. W Hotels will go head-to-head against Estrella Damm when both ships set sail for Barcelona on April 5, 2010. Seeing as W opened its first hotel in NY over ten years ago and just opened its first hotel in Western Europe—W Barcelona—late last year, it was fitting that W Hotels participate. In honor of the upcoming sail, W Hotels and Estrella Damm will compete in a two-handed regatta in New York harbor on April 3rd, beginning at the Statue of Liberty.
