The Banyan Tree Group is redefining the luxury resort genre with its new off-the-beaten-track Banyan Tree Escape in Bali, Indonesia. The new Buahan resort is the first “No Walls, No Doors” concept from Banyan Tree, offering an immersive natural experience in an untouched part of Ubud.

Situated in a quiet enclave surrounded by rice paddies and jungle, Buahan takes guests into the heart of an incredible landscape. There are sweeping views of majestic peaks, lush jungle and beyond. With just 16 balés (villas), guests will often find themselves alone within unique natural surroundings. The property also has dedicated hideaway spots, offering a sanctuary for meditation, reading, or simply a moment of calm.

The balés take the concept of indoor-outdoor living into new realms. Just a thin veil separates guests from the sights and sounds of nature. All of the balés offer 180-degree panoramic views from spacious living areas.

At the resort’s heart lies the Open Kitchen and Living Room, open dining and living spaces designed to create a sense of community among guests. It is also where the resort brings its sustainability ethos to life. The menu has been developed as a zero-waste, farm-to-table concept that champions local traditions and techniques. The menu is 70% plant-based and ingredients are sourced within a one-hour drive of the property.

The hyper-local approach extends to the property’s Botanist Bar, which centers its cocktail menu around local-grown natural ingredients and botanicals. Similarly, the Toja Spa has built its treatment concept around the ancient traditions of the Buahan village and its surrounding areas.

This sustainable, preservative approach was built into the very core of the project right from the start. To ensure the surrounding environment was preserved, local architect Gede Kresna and his team based the sociological, architectural and cultural philosophies of the property on a four-month research project. All of the resort’s guest experiences have been created to ensure guests feel immersed in local traditions and understand its relationship with the surrounding community. Guests can view the raw results of this research project during their stay.

Guest experiences are based around its three pillars: connecting to nature, a discovery experience and community integration. Whether curated or self-guided, guests are encouraged to visit local cultural festivals and interact with communities, which could lead to rejuvenating and spontaneous opportunities for personal development.

Ms. Ho Ren Yung, VP of brand HQ of Banyan Tree, said: “We have owned this piece of land for over twenty years, and the conceptualization of Banyan Tree Escape started almost five years ago. It is a true labor of love and a bold experience proposition we are excited to see become real. Even while we are calling it Escape, at the heart of this brand is creating a way for people to be present, to unearth, renew, and a way to truly ‘be here.’ Fireflies in your room at night, and morning mists with the sunrise – it is an unparalleled journey, communing with nature, alone and with others.”
