The Ritz-Carlton is synonymous with luxury all over the US, but nowhere does it have a stronger presence than in the city of Miami. Overseeing both The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne and The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, Derek Flint is responsible for keeping the brand’s stellar reputation intact in one of its strongest markets.
To celebrate the property’s ongoing partnership with Elite Traveler’s World’s Finest Suites, we put a few questions to its general manager, Derek Flint.
What attracted you to your position at the hotel?
I had the privilege of serving as the general manager at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami for nearly six years before an opportunity arose to relocate to Asia. In 2020, while navigating my responsibilities there, the pandemic struck, placing me in Beijing during a period of unprecedented global challenge. It was during this time that Mark Ferland, area general manager at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, extended a compelling invitation to return to the United States. Without any hesitation, I embraced the opportunity to rejoin the esteemed hotel group that has been the most instrumental in my professional journey.
Tell us about a defining moment in your role that sticks out.
Amidst the turbulence of 2008, which happened to be the same year I assumed leadership of the hotel, the economic downturn precipitated a significant financial crisis. Faced with a wave of group cancellations, each reservation became indispensable for supporting our team’s livelihoods. In response, we crafted a meticulous site visit strategy, carefully tailoring restaurant offerings and guest profiles. This comprehensive plan quickly became pivotal in securing essential business. Guests who experienced our hospitality during these visits consistently favored our establishment for their stay.
What separates The Ritz-Carlton Suite from anything else on offer in the region?
The Ritz-Carlton Suite at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami is distinguished by its spectacular 180-degree views of the island’s stunning surroundings. Its design features expansive windows and spacious balconies that not only flood the suite with natural light, but also provide guests with a panoramic perspective of the tranquil outdoor landscape. Additionally, guests can enjoy exclusive access to the Club Lounge, where they can indulge in personalized service and luxury amenities, ensuring a memorable and refined stay at this exceptional retreat.
What exciting plans do you have for the hotel that you can share with our readers?
