Mandarin Oriental New York Partners with Michelin-starred Masa

The exclusive collaboration will see hotel guests able to order a sushi and temaki box directly to their room.

By Kim Ayling

Few things match up to the joy of hotel room service – but Mandarin Oriental New York is taking one of life’s great joys to the next level with the launch of a new partnership with Michelin-starred NYC restaurant, Masa.

The exclusive collaboration will see hotel guests able to order a sushi and temaki box directly to their room, each made by skilled Masa sushi chefs. Priced at $600 and designed for two to share, each box comes with four pieces each of toro, kinme, salmon, kanpachi, akami, ika squid, as well as ikura roll, Masa toro roll, caviar roll and ume shiso roll.

For an added level of luxe, guests staying in one of the hotel’s three signature suites (the Oriental Suite, Presidential Suite and Suite 5000) can pre-book the VIP omakase experience. The $2,000 offering includes four to five seasonal appetizers and 12-15 pieces of sushi, each crafted using the freshest, highest quality fish.

While the prices might feel steep, to those in the know, the prestige of Masa warrants such a tag. Opened in 2001 by legendary chef Masayoshi Takayama, Masa sits at the top of every ‘best sushi restaurants in NYC’ list with an impressive three Michelin stars to its name (making it one of just four restaurants in the city to hold such an accolade).

Embodying chef Takayama’s take on Shibui – a Japanese concept that refers to refined, sophisticated elegance – Masa’s cuisine is billed as an inventive take on a classic Japanese omakase experience.

Dining in-restaurant will set you back upwards of $750, with its top experience coming in at $950 per person – and that’s just for food. $600 in the comfort of your suite suddenly sounds like a great deal.

Topping off the partnership, Mandarin Oriental guests who make a reservation at Bar Masa, which adjoins the main restaurant, via the hotel’s concierge team will receive a free glass of champagne during their visit.
