Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Some of the region's best hiking can be found just a few miles off The Strip.

By Emma

Dominated by red sandstone peaks and seasonal waterfalls, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is the perfect hiking spot to get a dose of fresh air. It’s located in the Mojave Desert and features many hiking trails and panoramic viewing spots. If you’re not a hiker, there is a 13-mile one-way scenic drive. Along the way, expect plenty of greenery, wildlife and even a seasonal waterfall at Ice Box Canyon. There are many cultural and educational resources at the Visitor Center if you’re interested in learning more about the unique flora and fauna of Nevada, and specifically, the Mojave Desert. A few of the most notable creatures that inhabit the park are rock squirrels, lizards, snakes (some poisonous) and many hawks. There are also desert bighorn sheep within the rough cliff country. Just south is the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, also known for its hiking trails and historic buildings.
