Cabo San Lucas, Baja California – Reported by Elite Traveler, the private jet lifestyle magazine
Claiming a well-established reputation as one of the world’s most luxurious escapes, Cabo San Lucas evokes images of tranquil afternoons spent stretching on the beach or hitting the tee. But last weekend, in a throwback to its origins as a fishing empire—in the form of an estimated 1,213-pound marlin catch—might just inspire serious sportfishing enthusiasts to make a trip.
In what sounds like a seafaring adventure right off the shores of Cabo San Lucas, the incredible unofficial-record-breaking catch played out over the course of 28 hours (records aren’t kept for catches off Cabo San Lucas). From 8:20am till sunset last Saturday, Richard Biehl from Traverse City, Michigan wrestled the blue billfish all by himself before taking a break until sunrise. Fresh food and water supplies had to be radioed in to Biehl and the crew of another yacht, Go Deep, who constructed a snag rig that set in additional hooks to finally reel the marlin in around noon the next day.
So for those who have always dreamed of witnessing a giant fish leap out of water, plunging into an epic struggle on the waters, then towing your prize in after a heroic fight, the waters off Cabo San Lucas might just hit the spot. The endless offerings of seaside imbibements and pampering treatments to heal your sore muscles after won’t hurt, either.
