Creating of a symphony orchestra is a feat, but having it harmoniously play the works of art bestowed upon it is something truly exceptional. Various trade specialists, engineers, designers, technicians and artisans all come together with a unified passion and a common goal to rise to this challenge. These numerous talents, at the peak of their respective art forms, combined to form symbiotic relationships in order to reach for perfection.
Although the goal of perfection is a colossal one, Bovet’s methods are simple: a shared passion, attention to detail in all aspects of work regardless of its visibility or function, and making no compromises.
This new line is available in two distinctive diameters: 45mm and 51mm in limited editions of 100 timepieces each. This New Model has joined the BOVET collection bringing a new level of design and innovation into the lineup.
The Movement
The two sizes of this model are equipped with the manufacture’s caliber 13BA05. It is a rare tourbillon movement being that it has a self-winding mechanism. Crafted by the artisans of Dimier, Bovet’s artisan manufacture, this movement displays a 7-day power reserve on the front at 9 o’clock. The bi-directional 22K gold winding rotor provides an ultra efficient winding while the 47 jewels and the lightened tourbillon cage share in the effort of avoiding wasted energy. It is fitted with four hands to indicate the power reserve, hours/minutes, and the seconds hand is carried by the 60-second tourbillon cage.
The Case
The materials of the case were carefully chosen for their fine quality and mechanical, physical and aesthetic properties. The bezel, case-back, and crown are fashioned in refined looking 18K red gold (5N) as well as the traditional bow, a signature trait of every Bovet timepiece. The angled bow also maintains the art deco styling of the Sportster collection, which is based on the design of a 1930’s original Bovet pocket watch.
The key material in this case construction is the titanium (Ti) case-side, which was chosen for several reasons. It is a low-density metal meaning that it is lightweight. It is also very strong, as strong as some steels, but 45% lighter, and actually has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal, which make it perfect for a Sportster watch. It is corrosion resistant from salt water and chlorine.
The Titanium is also coated with a PVD treatment for additional strength and an aesthetic black color. Between the corrosion resistance of gold and titanium each owner can be assured of the longevity of their Bovet timepiece. The case was also especially constructed to be water resistant to 300 meters (990 ft) in order to be deemed a Saguaro, Bovet’s high water-resistance Sportster collection.
The screw-in case-back contributes to a watch’s water resistance and is especially fitted with 12 screws, which is double the 6 usually found on Sportsters. The screw-in crown, a feature of many divers’ watches, helps prevent water getting into the case through the watch-stem hole.
When it is screwed down it forms a water-tight seal up to 300 meters.
The Decoration
In order to pay homage to the Bovet artisan crafts, there is a special attention placed on the decorations found in the Sportster Tourbillon. The movement bridges and baseplate are finished with vertical ‘côtes de Genève’ giving depth and contrast. The bridges are also angled and blackened in harmony with their iconic construction and design. The 22K gold rotor is hand-chisled in a ‘bris de verre’ styling for a lustrous result and contrast from the matte black bridges beneath. The plate underneath the transparent sapphire crystal dial is available in either a hand-chiseled finish or an equally complicated mirror-polish and coated with black PVD. The engraved text found on the bridges of the movement is filled with a bold red lacquer.
There are numerous secrets in the design carefully designated for the enjoyment of the careful observer. For example, the tourbillon bridge has three branches and looks like a propeller, but when looking more closely, each branch is in the shape of the signature Sportster bow.
