Tortola, BVI – Reported by Elite Traveler, the Private Jet Lifestyle Magazine

The BVI Tourist Board is pleased to recognize the BVI National Culinary Team on their recent achievement at the annual Taste of the Caribbean Culinary Competition. The BVI is well-known for its vibrant, delicious local foods, one-of-a-kind drinks, and fine dining experiences so it is fitting that the team would fare so well in this prestigious competition.
Featuring culinary teams from 11 Caribbean countries and territories, the annual Taste of the Caribbean Competition was held at the Rio Del Mar Hotel in Puerto Rico from September 9-12, 2010. The teams participated in qualifying rounds of “live kitchen” competitions and prepared a three-course meal in less than four hours using a mystery basket of ingredients that is kept secret until the competition begins. The event also provided educational opportunities through seminars, workshops, tastings and demonstrations designed to enhance performance, style and creativity in Caribbean Contemporary Cuisine.

The team was comprised of Head Coach Chef Henry Prince, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College; Team Captain Chef Kenneth Molyneaux, Treasure Isle Hotel; Chefs Imran Ashton, Charlie’s; Peter Hamil, Long Bay Beach Resort; Junior Chef Jason Dalmida Jr., Bitter End Yacht Club; Pastry Chefs Macgarvey Thompson, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College; Ansony Salmon, Peter Island Resort & Spa; Nevile Tucker, Long Bay Beach Resort; and Bartender Elton Sprauve, Mine Shaft Cafe.

“The BVI team displayed professionalism, passion and outstanding teamwork throughout the competition – I look forward to the team’s participation next year at the 2011 Taste of the Caribbean,” said Dr. Birney Harrigan, Chairman of the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association, the presenting organization for the BVI National Culinary Team.

The BVI National Culinary Team won a National Silver Medal in contemporary culinary arts, a first-time Junior Chef Medal (Jason Dalmida, Bitter End Yacht Club), Most Creative Overall Drink and Most Creative Non-Alcoholic Drink (both for Elton Sprauve, Mine Shaft). All team members look forward to continuing to provide the Caribbean’s very best drinks and dishes to BVI residents and visitors alike
