Cuervo y Sobrinos, the Swiss watch brand with its origins in Havana, launched its long-awaited boutique/museum in the central historic district of Havana. CYS will be the first international watch brand to inaugurate its own store on the island of Cuba.
“El Reloj Cuervo y Sobrinos” is located in a 19th century historical building on Muralla Street, the new site is opposite the original headquarters of the brand. Inside one can enjoy a boutique and a museum with antique watches, writing instruments and memorabilia. An elegant bar and coffee bistro provides a gathering spot that will take the visitor back to the Havana of the 1940s.
In this refined Art Deco ambiance the original vault from the old store on San Rafael is displayed. Each detail of the interior restoration is a tribute to the heritage of the brand started more than a century ago.
The President of Cuervo y Sobrinos, Marzio Villa, believes this is a significant move forward for the brand: “Yes we are a Swiss corporation and we can say unequivocally that we have no ties to the Cuban government. But forever we will have ties to the island of Cuba and the city of Havana. This is our heritage and it is important for people to know about our proud origins. And for this we have made a strong statement and affirmation of our heritage by restoring this site. Now absolutely everyone who visits the museum will understand our continuity and enduring historic roots”.
To mark this opening, Marzio Villa and the Ambassadors of Switzerland, Spain and Italy were present. While the brand honors its roots, it has also become a source of great pride and a significant icon that endures and underscores the city’s prestigious past and fascinating history. For many who remember the island before the revolution, this represents a very real victory and another step closer to the dream of bringing the island back to life and restoring the dignity of Old Havana. The efforts to preserve and restore the historic downtown area are just the beginning.
