By Pardhasaradhi Gonuguntla

Executive Chef Christopher Lee of Aureole NYC; Roberto Serralles, Vice President of Destileria Serralles/Don Q Rums; Mixologist James MeniteMixologist James Menite from Porterhouse NYCDon Q, Puerto Rico’s Premium Rum, ramped up its aggressive US expansion program by celebrating the premiere of Icons Among Us: Jazz In The Present Tense. The four-part documentary film series examines the world of contemporary Jazz. Don Q Rums, in conjunction with Rums of Puerto Rico, hosted a revolutionary cocktail reception at the famed “Jazz at Lincoln Center” venue in NYC. The 150 guests were delighted to be among the first to sample food parings and specialty cocktails created especially for Don Q by some notable fine dining and mixology talents.

Famed TV mixologist James Menite of the Porterhouse created the memorable “Rum Plum” and his “Caribbean Club Punch” utilizing Don Q Cristal that left guests yearning for more. While the artistic Esteban Ordoñez of Apoteke presented his version of an “authentic” Mojito using Don Q Grand Añejo and imported yerba buena herb.

Don Q broke new ground by adding a flare to the cocktail hour with the unveiling of culinary pairings unique to rum. Top Chef Jeff Mcnnis of the Ritz-Carlton South Beach did his take on the “Bloody Mary,” celebrating heirloom tomatoes and Don Q Limón, called the “Bloodless Mary.” 2-star Michelin awarded Executive Chef Christopher Lee of Charlie Palmer’s Aureole, highlighted his mastery of molecular mixology with his version of a Piña Colada encapsulated sphere using Don Q Coco served in a shot glass rimmed with toasted coconut. Chef Lee will compete for charity on “Top Chef Masters,” the widely popular spinoff of the “Top Chef Series,” premiering on Wednesday, June 10th at 10pm.

“When I sampled Don Q, I was instantly impressed with how natural and pure its nature was and I knew it would lend itself to fascinating food opportunities. I had long visioned being able to create something that would stay together for 10 plus seconds and then release waves of flavor lingering on the palate. Don Q’s clean and distinct flavors allowed for us to do that with the Piña Colada shot, never previously achieved,” said Chef Lee.

“We are extremely pleased to bring together cocktails, cuisine and jazz in such a unique environmentWith this partnership we proudly salute the roots of America’s original music. The documentary and the concert series provides us with the perfect platform to invite the American consumer to discover and experience our award winning Don Q Rums within the context of an innovative and cutting-edge musical experience.”
