Horology: The Art of Alarms

By Chris Boyle

Master Grand Reveil from Jaeger-LeCoultreNautical Heritage from VulcainClassique le Reveil du Tsar from BreguetNew York, New York – Reported by Nate Borgelt for Elite Traveler, the private jet lifestyle magazine

First introduced on a wristwatch in the 1940s, the mechanical alarm complication is a must for horology-loving politicos and CEOs. In these three shining examples, highly skilled craftsmanship caters to the ever-practical need for reminders of important meetings and special events.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grand Reveil

The Master Grand Reveil from Jaeger-LeCoultre combines two fantastic complications, a mechanical alarm and a perpetual calendar. The watch features a conservative dial despite the amount of information, showing the calendar, moon phase, year and alarm setting (vibrate or audible). The dial is complemented by hands in the same metal and a toned center seconds hand. Additionally, a useful “red security zone” lets the wearer know when it is safe to change the calendar settings on the watch. The watch is available in stainless steel, pink gold or platinum ($29,700 in steel; $49,200 in pink gold; $80,000 in platinum).

Vulcain Nautical Heritage The name Vulcain is synonymous with mechanical alarms. Vulcain has been producing the complication since 1947 (the Cricket caliber was a world first), and last year they presented the Nautical Heritage diving watch with alarm. Inspired by diving watches of the 1960s, and issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vulcain’s first Cricket Nautical, the limited-edition timepiece also has a built-in decompression table that is adjustable via a crown at 4 o’clock. Crafted from steel, this special edition comes with a black dial, green accents and Arabic quarters. The standard edition, also available in steel, touts a black, gray, white or blue dial and blue, green or red accents (all editions: $5,975).

Breguet Classique Le Reveil Du Tsar Breguet beautifully translates a classic design to incorporate an alarm complication in the Classique Le Reveil du Tsar wristwatch. Rendered in 18K yellow or white gold, the Reveil du Tsar features Breguet’s signature coin-edge case and stunning guilloché dial. The brand brings multiple complications into this watch via the 519F movement with an impressive 45-hour power reserve. The alarm-time indicator appears at 3 o’clock, the 24-hour dial showing a second time zone at 9 o’clock, the alarm power reserve indicator at 11 o’clock, the alarm on/off indicator at 12 o’clock and the small seconds and date at 6 o’clock ($39,600 in 18K yellow gold; $40,700 in 18K white gold).
