The recently launched watch manufacturer, Les Ateliers deMonaco, introduced the new Grand Tourbillon XP Carré d’Or timepiece in white gold. This limited edition of 18 pieces, with a 44.3mm by 48mm case, features the brand’s patented Grand Tourbillon XP1 movement, developed and manufactured in-house. The movement uniquely combines the craftsmanship of the past with the precision and technology of today to deliver one of the most accurate tourbillon movements in the world. The Xtreme Precision (XP) technology allows the 28,800 beats an hour to be translated into pure accuracy that is especially regulated to have a tolerance between 0-2 seconds/24H. This precision is enabled by three supporting innovations: perfect balance cage; silicium escapement and lever; deep reactive ion etching and LIGA.
The perfect balance cage technology allows the watchmaker to balance the weight of the tourbillon cage by manually adding or removing small metal weights at the opposite sides of the escapement. The silicium escapement and lever—a material normally used in aerospace, microprocessors and semi-conductor industry for its unique properties of low weight, extreme hardness and high corrosion resistance—results in significantly improved energy efficiency. The super precise manufacturing methodologies of deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) and LIGA are able to make each component as a singular component. In comparison, the traditional method uses steel and ruby parts that require continuous fine-tuning of the machines due to wear and tear. As a consequence, the DRIE and LIGA process have significantly improved manufacturing accuracy: up to 10 times more accurate than conventional machining methods.
