Mayakoba Resort Announces First Jim Mclean Golf Academy In Mexico

By Pardhasaradhi Gonuguntla

Mayakoba Resort, the expansive, ultra-luxurious destination along Mexico’s picturesque Riviera Maya, announced it will unveil a state-of-the-art Jim McLean Golf Academy later this fall. The Mayakoba location will be the first and only Jim McLean Golf Academy in Mexico.

Slated to open October 15th, the new golf academy will join El Camaleon, the spectacular Greg Norman-designed golf course and host of the PGA Tour’s Mayakoba Golf Classic (Mexico’s only PGA Tour event) to establish Mayakoba as the destination of choice for discerning golf travelers in Mexico. El Camaleon, which opened in 2006, is owned by Obrascon Huarte Lain, S.A. (OHL) and operated by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.

“Sharing a relentless pursuit of excellence, the new Jim McLean Golf Academy at El Camaleon will elevate Mayakoba’s golf experience to even higher ground. The addition of this award-winning golf academy reflects OHL’s unwavering commitment to offering Mayakoba owners and guests the finest destination resort experience,” says Juan Aguilar, Director of Mayakoba.

The Jim McLean Golf Academy at Mayakoba will feature a two-bay SuperStation (with the ability to expand to three bays at a moment’s notice). Students will benefit from the latest technology in golf analysis computer software as well as highly personalized instruction programs crafted by certified Jim McLean Master Instructors.

“We are pleased to be opening our golf academy at the premier resort destination in the Riviera Maya,” said Jim McLean. “Mayakoba already offers a truly world-class golf course that hosts the only PGA Tour event in Mexico. With the facilities, technology and quality instructors available to us, we believe our golf academy at Mayakoba will become recognized as the finest golf instruction facility in Mexico, offering all types of teaching programs to both resort guests and visitors.”

The golf academy will be the perfect complement to Mayakoba’s El Camaleón, a 7,067-yard par-72 golf course that winds its way through three distinct landscapes, presenting a variety of challenges that make it enjoyable for golfers of all abilities. The course utilizes Mayakoba’s beautiful canal system, enabling golfers to step out of their rooms and into a boat, which will ferry them to the first tee – located on a cenote, the naturally occurring freshwater caves unique to the Yucatan Peninsula.

“Each of Fairmont’s golf destinations around the world is a masterpiece unto itself,” said Douglas Goubault, general manager of El Camaleon, Mayakoba. “Our goal is to provide our guests with exceptional golf experiences that embrace the unique nature of their locales and to add value by offering our guests experiences they can get nowhere else. The addition of the Jim McLean Golf Academy to Mayakoba fits in perfectly with our vision.”

The Jim McLean Golf Academy at Mayakoba will be the second international location for McLean. In 2008, he opened a school at Golf Santander in Madrid, Spain. McLean also plans to expand his presence in the U.S., opening a new golf school at Red Ledges near Salt Lake City, Utah in spring 2010.

McLean’s flagship school is located at the world-famous Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, FL. He also has golf schools at PGA West and La Quinta Golf Resort & Spa in La Quinta, CA; The Wigwam Resort & Spa near Phoenix, AZ; the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Traverse City, MI; and the Jim McLean Golf Center at Waterchase in Ft. Worth, TX.
