London, UK – Reported by Elite Traveler, the private jet lifestyle magazine
Amid the hurly-burly of Harrods Food Halls, Pan Chai excels at Japanese-themed cuisine in a stylish bar top setting. The brainchild of Eddie Lim—owner of Mango Tree in Belgravia and Awana in Chelsea—Pan Chai offers a wide range of sushi, sashimi and salads, as well as larger plates to fuel the more grueling shopping sprees. A generous list of wines, champagnes and sake completes the picture nicely—why not toast your fish and good fortune with a bottle of 2002 Dom Pérignon?
Executive chef Ian Pengelley—of Gilgamesh fame—takes as much pride in theater as flavor, with dishes arriving with plenty of fanfare. Signature dishes include Harrods Special sushi rolls (crabmeat, tobiko, cucumber, topped with Japanese mayonnaise, salmon and spring onions), and a seaweed salad with collagen, peanut and miso. Among the bigger dishes, the soft shell crab tempura and wagyu beef with sweet jog glaze are two crowd-pleasers, or for something smaller, give yourself the rare treat of fresh abalone, served here on a bed of asparagus tips with yuzu and wasabi jelly.
For some flappingly fresh sashimi, try the Nigiri-Kiku—a smorgasbord of sea urchin, salmon, tuna belly, sea bass, shrimp, tuna, salmon roe, eel, negi-otoro tartar, scallop, yellow tail, tamago, spicy salmon roll and foie gras. For a little bit of everything, the Omakase daily platter gives you a tasty mix of sashimi, sushi and ‘inside-out’ sushi rolls.
Comfy leather and marble stools surround the open-plan kitchen, letting you watch the cut and thrust of the chefs at work. The modern interior respects the grandeur of this Grade II listed building, and with only 22 covers at the bar, Pan Chai is perfect for a quick pit stop.
