Universal Watch Company celebrated the inauguration of its new landmark showroom, Ernst Benz boutique and watch repair facility in Birmingham’s historic Briggs building with a ribbon cutting ceremony and book signing by internationally watch journalist and Elite Traveler contributor Elizabeth Doerr.
“The history of this over hundred year old building is consistent with the core values of Universal Watch,” said owner and master watchmaker Efim Khankin. “Fine timepieces are meant to stand the test of time and still utilize a five hundred year old mechanical technical craftsmanship. We consider it an honor to be asked by Mr. Fuller to bring our showroom and repair facility into this building. We constructed this building using natural materials: wood, glass and metal and designed the aesthetics to match the vintage inspired timepieces that we are known for.”
Michigan-native international watch journalist Elizabeth Doerr shares the Khankin family’s passion for the enduring art of independent watchmaking. In her new book, Twelve Faces of Time, Doerr focuses on the icons and connoisseurs of the watch industry. “The Khankin family is highly respected for their talented international team of watchmakers, large inventory of rare components and superior customer service. The decision to open the world’s first Ernst Benz boutique in downtown Birmingham demonstrates their commitment to the community that has been their home for over 30 years.”
Leonid Khankin has grown the Ernst Benz line through the development of new models that embrace the spirit of aviation, travel and fine watchmaking while embracing modern-vintage aesthetics. “My passion is to create timeless masterpieces that will be treasured by watch connoisseurs from celebrities including Chef Mario Batali to emerging local talents like rookie Tiger Brennan Boesch.”
