W Hotels Worldwide Announces Renovation Of Its Sublime W San Diego Property

By Pardhasaradhi Gonuguntla

NEW YORK – W Hotels Worldwide today announced the completed renovation of its sun-soaked W San Diego property by design guru and style icon, Thom Filicia. W San Diego underwent a transformation with the complete redesign of the property’s Living Room lounge, WET pool deck and Veranda poolside bar. This California collaboration combines the balance of fun and function with the signature styles of Thom Filicia and W Hotels.

In collaboration with W’s award-winning design team, Filicia has created whimsical and sophisticated surf-inspired environments, integrating the signature style and warmth of W Hotels with his own unique and clever design personality. The tone is light and full of stylish surprises, but always sophisticated and modern. Inspired by San Diego’s luxurious laid-back lifestyle, the design embodies the true essence of the seaside city.

“Since the W San Diego opened it has represented the height of cool, hip, and sophistication,” said interior designer Thom Filicia, “I’m very excited about this renovation and the chance to bring new life to the hotel’s unique public spaces. My vision is a complete transformation created by the incorporation of balanced layers of inviting, modern, and evocative design with organic touches.”

TFI and W’s design team went on a journey to rediscover and resurrect the roots of true San Diego culture. The design for W San Diego embodies an atmosphere of couture comfort reflective of the laid-back luxury lifestyle of San Diego. By creating a whimsical yet modern, location inspired design, guests will be able to experience the true essence of the beachside city.

Living Room at W San Diego

Living Room has been transformed into a fresh new space for guests, creating a welcoming and stylish social atmosphere. Multifunctional seating areas allow guests to lounge in luxury, take advantage of complimentary wireless Internet access, peruse through the hotel’s intriguing reading selections, enjoy delectable delights, and sip cocktails with friends at the chic new Living Room bar. Warm and cool color tones ebb and flow throughout the space creating a serene and modern beach-like atmosphere infused with high design.

The space transforms from day to night, as a DJ spins sounds for chilling from an eye-in-the sky DJ booth. Three immense floating light fixtures illuminate Living Room, bringing a sun soaked glow to the space. Wood-louvered indoor cabanas allow guests to recline in intimate privacy, while comfortable and stylish table seating enables travelers to conduct business if needed. LCD panels above the cabanas and behind the Welcome Desk play vintage surf footage of San Diego beaches. A sophisticated and whimsical installation of surfboard fins exhibited on the grand wall of Living Room serve as a monument to Southern California surf culture. The design honors San Diego’s seaside history with a fresh spin on So-Cal chic.

Veranda Bar and WET

The renovation of W San Diego’s second floor bar Veranda, and connecting outdoor swimming pool WET, continue to enhance the guest’s experience with seamless chic modernity. As they travel through the indoor-outdoor space, guests will feel renewed by the cool blue ocean hues, sleek and stylish furniture, and the fresh breeze drifting inside. Filicia and W’s design team have transformed Veranda and WET into an alluring oasis for travelers. Veranda has been redesigned to accommodate more guests with low bungalow seating that wraps around the indoor wall. Two stunning coral chandeliers illuminate the space, as blue and white design elements give the lounge a nautical feel. Veranda’s bar features whimsical and decorative 1950’s surfboard inspirations, and serves delicious cocktails day and night.

At WET, guests can recline on chaise lounges by the pool, soaking in the sun, while enjoying cocktails and nibbles from Veranda. WET features new highlights such as a stunning wall of mirrors, whimsical botanicals, and a dramatic hyper photo of a wave appearing to crest.

Beach Rooftop Bar—COMING IN ’09!

Beach— the first ever rooftop bar in San Diego with a fire pit, cabana service and three tons of heated sand—will also be designed by Filicia and is expected to launch in early 2009. W’s design team and Filicia have created a fresh, edgy, and whimsical atmosphere where surf is art, and relaxing is key. The rooftop outdoor redesign will accommodate more guests with an extended wooden deck, the addition of a second bar, expanded seating environments, more cabanas, and new design elements that are full of vibrant color and heart. The deck will be enlarged to cover more ground space, enabling guest to have easy access to the two bars and five cabanas.

Two of the new cabanas will be freestanding seating pods painted in bright colors. They are inspired by old surf vans, made modern with a chic W twist. The bars will be designed with a special curve referencing the shape of a wave and the movement of the ocean. A fire pit will be surrounded by ottoman seating covered in colorful outdoor fabric reminiscent of woven hammocks and the feeling of leisurely afternoons. There will be two vintage seahorse rockers installed in the sand to add an element of playful whimsy, along with driftwood tables and oversized planters. The remaining three connecting cabanas have been transformed into chic lounging dens, with flowing white fabric and louvered wooded walls. There will be a sky platform on top of the middle cabana to allow guests an extra perch and view of the outdoor cityscape. Lush green plants will enliven the space and add pops of green against the blue sky. Beach will be revealed in early 2009, giving worldwide travelers and San Diego locals a place to get away and relax in sophisticated comfort.
