Winemakers Dinners Debut in BVI

By Pardhasaradhi Gonuguntla

The British Virgin Islands plays host to one of the most unique events in the international culinary world as the BVI Tourist Board presents the second in their highly acclaimed Virgin Islands Winemakers Dinners series this year. From December 3 – 6th, seven of the world’s most renowned chefs and winemakers will be paired together to prepare four extraordinary seven course dinners for guests in some of the Islands’ most beautiful locations.

The event is the brainchild of Mr. Ajit George, Managing Director of Nail Bay Resort and Co-Chair of the BVI Charitable Fund, which will be the beneficiary of the event. The Dinners grossed over $100,000 when they took place in July of this year to rave reviews.

“The Winemakers Dinners give us a rare opportunity to create a world-class event that attracts visitors and BVI locals alike to experience the finest cuisine, award-winning wines, and the exquisite scenery of our beautiful islands all at once, said Ms. Hadassah Ward, Acting Director of the BVI Tourist Board. “The fact that this all comes together to benefit our local charities makes it even more exciting. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

The event will have each chef preparing one of the seven courses at each meal. Dinners will be prepared under the leadership of Vikram Garg, Executive Chef of the famed Halekulani On The Beach at Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii. Joining Chef Garg wil be Chef Anne Burrell, host of the Food Network program, Secrets of a Restaurant Chef and sous-chef to Mario Batali on Iron Chef America, fromer Top Chef contestant Otto Borsich who has also worked at some of America’s finest establishments including the Pierre Hotel, Le Bernadin, Bellagio Hotel and Charlie Trotters; Taekyung Chung from Chung Cooking Studio, Tokyo, Japan who is the author of The Korean Table, the bible of Korean Cooking and Roberto Trevino from the Bodati, San Juan, Puerto Rico who participated in Iron Chef and the Next Iron Chef. Locally renowned Chef Albert Kramer, who previously served as first Executive Chef at Little Dix Bay Resort in Virgin Gorda and Pastry Chef Heidi Beyhair of Biras Creek Resort of Virgin Gorda, will be preparing their specialties as well. All the chefs are volunteering their time and talent.

The seven wineries presenting their wines include Francis Ford Coppola’s Rubicon from California; Cheval des Andes from Argentina; Weingut Grans Fassian from Leiwen, Germany; Tenuta San Leonardo from Trentino, Italy; the Grand Cru champagne house Pierre Paillard from Bouzy, France; Weingut Reinhold Haart from Piesport, Germany and Terrazas De Los Andes from Argentina. All the wineries are donating the wines poured during this event. In addition each winery is donating some of their most interesting wines for a small auction.

“The purpose of the Winemakers Dinners is twofold,” explained Mr. George. “While our primary focus is to raise funds to support local BVI charities, this also provides us with the opportunity to raise the bar for the culinary experience in the British Virgin Islands, helping visitors to view the territory as a fine dining destination and encouraging local eateries to maintain and even enhance that standard.”

The locations selected to host the chefs, winemakers, and their guests include: Baraka Point, a 12,000 sq. ft. luxury villa at Nail Bay.
