Luxury Camping in California with AutoCamp

By Olivia Cuccaro

By Olivia Cuccaro

Adventure travel is moving to compete with the lavish hotel and resort experiences that have defined luxury vacations for years. The desire to immerse ourselves in nature and embark on outdoor pursuits has paved the way for camping trips that still maintain the comforts of a hotel.

In California, AutoCamp is a new type of outdoor lodging that appeals to the wanderlust mindset without sacrificing deluxe accommodations. Designed by architecture firm, Anacapa, and Dan Weber, they feature Airstream suites and canvas tents with interiors designed by Geremia Design. AutoCamp achieves the American camping trip feel with added amenities for a relaxing stay in Russian River or Santa Barbara.

In Santa Barbara, Deluxe Queen Suites 1 and 5 are housed in retro airstreams (dating back to 1972 and 1964, respectively). Each suite is 31 ft in length and features a private bedroom with queen-size bed and Casper mattress, lounge with pull-out bed and linens, flat-screen TV with cable, audio sound system, bathroom with deep-soaking tub, Malin + Goetz bath products and plush robes. A modern kitchen includes a double-burner cooktop, convection microwave, refrigerator, basic cookware, dishes and utensils. Outside, there’s an electric grill on the spacious patio, where you can enjoy meals alfresco or spend quiet time in Adirondack lounge chairs. Located off the beaten path, yet only a mile from town, discover the area’s pristine coastal landscapes on provided beach cruisers.

In Russian River, the Airstream suites include a queen-size bed with Casper mattress, flat-screen TV with cable, audio sound system, kitchen with microwave, basic cooking utensils, wine glasses and silverware. The spa-inspired bathroom has a walk-in shower, custom vanity sink, robes and Malin + Goetz bath products. For additional guests, a sofa in the living room space converts into a full-size. Enjoy the scenery from the deck or utilize the fire pit for a rustic evening. If you’d prefer a more traditional camping adventure, luxury tents also feature a queen-size Casper bed with plush linens, lights, electrical outlets, patio with lounge chairs and campfire-style fire pit and grill. There’s also a a Midcentury Modern-designed Clubhouse with modern bathrooms and showers for tent guests, local snacks and beverages, indoor and outdoor fire pit lounges, quiet spaces and a camp reception area. The designated Adventure Desk can be consulted for ideas on what to do in the area, such as exploring the native Redwood forest and having a picnic, swimming or canoeing in the Russian River, touring a winery or taking a short drive to the ocean for some beach time.

Both properties can accommodate pets on request. For more information, please visit autocamp.com.
