Previously only available on Madison Avenue in New York, French leather goods atelier Moynat is bringing its handbags to the West Coast of the US for a limited time. In Los Angeles, Moynat has opened a pop-up shop at Barneys New York Beverly Hills for a six-month stretch.
Founded in 1849 by Pauline Moynat, the brand began as a trunk maker and has grown to be known for its exceptional handbags and small leather goods. Moynat designed the popular Limousine trunk as well as the Réjane bag, named after the French Belle-Époque actress Gabrielle Réjane. From one store on rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, Moynat has expanded to eight cities globally and is now bringing “Le Trunk Show” to California for the first time.
The pop-up shop is carrying hard-to-come by Moynat handbags as well as the Mambo for Moynat collection, a collaboration with the Chile-born artist. Mambo began his art career in Paris where he developed an abstract graphic painting style and caricatural portraits. At the pop-up, Moynat will showcase its classic pieces, the trio of Michelle, Brigitte and Claudia designed by Mambo and editions of the Quattro tote. To celebrate the opening of the Moynat pop-up, a limited-edition Quattro tote is available for purchase in taurillon gex leather with an illustration created and hand painted exclusively for Barneys.
The focal point of the shop is a special Mambo artist’s trunk created by Artistic Director Ramesh Nair, previously of Hermès. The unique piece features a curved bottom with storage for paints, leather pockets and a fold-out easel displaying some of the artist’s works. An original canvas used by Mambo covers the trunk, showcasing paint splatters and drips made by the painter himself.
