In the competitive landscape of tourism in the Maldives, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island likes to stay on top. March 1 2022 marked the completion of its latest luxury revitalization.
A multi-year, multi-million-dollar renovation, occurred on both of the islands Conrad occupies — the child-free Rangali and family-friendly Rangali-Finolhu.
The renovation was completed in time to mark a momentous year for the Maldives. It has been 50 years since the archipelagic paradise opened its crisp white shores to the international tourist trade. This move transformed the Maldives from one of the poorest countries in the world into a multi-billion-dollar economy.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Islands is no ordinary luxury paradise. The tranquil resort made waves in 2004 with the world’s first underwater restaurant Ithaa, and again in 2018 with the world’s first underwater suite at The Muraka.

So how exactly has this luxury island of innovation taken it further?
The vast majority of the renovation has taken place on Rangali Island, designed to be the retreat of dreams for adult couples.
In such a beautiful location, Conrad Maldives has brought the outside in by letting the surroundings do the talking. They have maintained their signature minimalist style while updating interiors and adding indoor-outdoor living spaces, offering uninterrupted views of the azure blue Indian Ocean.
This stylistic choice allows the wooden villas to disappear into their environment while the open-plan layout means every room offers stunning views.
While the villas have been renovated to a modern standard, they have kept that classic Maldivian over-water design. The “Villa on stilts” look was pioneered by Conrad and has been replicated across the country countless times.
This refurbishment maintains the privacy and exclusivity that Conrad Maldives enthusiasts know and love while elevating it to the next stage with fresh furnishings, appliances and interior architecture.

Like the villas on Rangali Island, the over-water spa has maintained its look and feel while modernizing with refreshed reception and treatment areas. There are also brand new indoor and outdoor relaxation spaces.
Through a collaboration with ISUN, Conrad Maldives’s over-water spa has created an exclusive treatment of 17 rituals, inspired by the spa’s unique setting.
Visitors will find themselves immersed in the experience from start to finish with practices like soulful meditation and therapeutic pampering.
Conrad worked with acclaimed hospitality and wellness architects Wimberly, Allison, Tong & Goo for the revamped exterior. The interiors were handled by Tokyo-born, New York-based Yuji Yamazaki who had previously worked with Conrad Maldives on The Muraka residence.
In addition to the villas and spa, Conrad Maldives have also retouched their restaurants and bars, bringing them to a modern standard. And the kids haven’t been forgotten either. The brand new children and teens facilities on Rangali-Finolhu island ensure Conrad Maldives is an unforgettable destination for all ages.
