Beaufort Gardens: Old Meets New in London’s Knightsbridge

Property of the Week: This sprawling three-bedroom apartment is set within a 19th-century townhouse.

By Irenie Forshaw

It’s little wonder London’s leafy Knightsbridge neighborhood is home to some of the most expensive properties in the UK. Sandwiched between the ultra-exclusive boroughs of Belgravia and Kensington, the district is very much the place to be and be seen. So when 41-43 Beaufort Gardens came on the market, naturally our ears pricked up.

Set across three beautiful 19th-century townhouses on a quiet residential street just a stone’s throw from Hyde Park, the property consists of nine unique apartments. This includes six lateral apartments, a duplex penthouse and two triplex ‘townhouses’ with private entrances.

Of course, this is prime real estate and certainly doesn’t come cheap. Harrods Estates is selling one of the gleaming new three-bedroom apartments on the first floor at 41-43 Beaufort Gardens for an impressive £14.5m (approx. $16.34m).

“Large lateral conversions are rare in London, and to find a first-floor apartment across three houses with nine full-length sash windows facing into greenery is very special,” says Simon Barry, head of new developments at Harrods Estates.

“What makes 41-43 Beaufort Gardens really stand out is that this is a new development, meticulously designed and constructed behind a period façade. The location is perfect: just two blocks from Harrods and a short stroll to Hyde Park.”

So what can future owners expect? For a start, the apartment is seriously spacious, spanning 2,554 sq ft of indoor space and an additional 350-sq-ft terrace. Entering the property, you walk through a beautiful black and white chequered marble lobby designed by Paris-based interior designer, Pierre Yovanovitch.

Throughout the property, Yovanovitch says he “sought to create a balance between a modern aesthetic firmly grounded in the 21st century and the Victorian classicism so characteristic of London.”

Above all, he explains, he used “authenticity of materials, generosity of space and volume, mastery of light and attention to the smallest detail to draw out a sense of luxury without ostentation.”

The apartment itself feels breezy and laid-back. Stepping inside the sprawling open-plan living/dining room from the lobby, you are met with soaring ceilings, beautiful timber flooring and floor-to-ceiling sash windows that bathe the interiors in natural light.

Yovanovitch has decorated the apartment in shades of beige and gray, with pops of color coming from the plush velvet cushions scattered on the sofa and verdant green potted plants. Next door, the kitchen has been fitted with glossy black stone worktops and high-end Gaggenau appliances.

The master bedroom has its own dressing room, as well as a gorgeous en-suite bathroom complete with a free-standing marble tub, rain shower and another bespoke floor designed by Yovanovitch in Thala gray stone and black Marquina marble.

As you would expect, the apartments at 41-43 Beaufort Gardens have been finished with all the latest technology including underfloor heating, comfort cooling and Lutron keypads for controlling the lighting. Future owners will also have access to the on-site gym and a personal high-security storage vault.
