The Best Luxury Hotels and Suites to Stay in Istanbul

From lavish Ottoman-era palaces to sleek, art-filled retreats.

By Ellys Woodhouse

Many cities are described as cultural melting pots, but few can truly lay claim to the title quite like Istanbul. Where continents collide and East meets West, and remains of former empires stand proudly next to contemporary art galleries, designer boutiques and buzzing restaurants, Istanbul’s vibrant identity continues as both the living relic of history and the growing epicenter of global culture.

As Turkey/Türkiye’s largest city continues to evolve, it draws discerning travelers seeking luxurious experiences in world-class hotels that embody the city’s spirit of renewal. Whether located in the storied streets of Sultanahmet, along the scenic Bosphorus, or amid the vibrant scenes of Beşiktaş and Nişantaşı, these hotels offer the best access to Istanbul’s rich heritage and cosmopolitan energy, blending opulent comfort with the allure of a city that bridges two continents.

So in one of Europe’s (and indeed the world’s) largest cities, Elite Traveler has handpicked the selection of Istanbul’s very best hotels and suites: from lavish Ottoman-era palaces to sleek, art-filled retreats.

The Peninsula Istanbul

Despite being one of the city’s newest luxury openings, swinging open its doors only last year, The Peninsula Istanbul has quickly established itself as one of the premier destinations along the Bosphorus. And like the city it calls home, the hotel’s design plays into the past and the present, with Turkish architect Zeynep Fadıllıoğlu transforming four adjoining buildings – three of which are protected landmarks dating back to the early 1900s – to form the hub that is The Peninsula Istanbul.

Each of its 177 rooms and suites is filled with the usual hallmarks and comforts of a Peninsula – monochrome palettes, thick Tai Ping carpets and state-of-the-art technology – but it’s the spa where the brand’s ethos shines brightest. Along with the outdoor pool, inside, there’s an 82-ft-long swimming pool, eight treatment rooms, a sauna, and, being in Istanbul after all, a purpose-built hammam.

Top suite to book: The Peninsula Suite

Occupying the entire top floor of the property’s southernmost building, the 5,447-sq-ft Peninsula Suite is the best place to soak up the views. The sprawling suite has an elegant living room complete with a baby grand piano, a private hammam and a lavish bathroom clad in Marmara marble. The real draw, however, is the outdoor terrace, which features a private rooftop swimming pool and breathtaking glass house solarium.

Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul

While many hotels in this list may feel fit for royalty, the Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul was quite literally built for it. As the only Ottoman-era imperial palace and hotel found along the Bosphorus, it has become a symbol of elegance in Turkey/ Türkiye since its opening in the early 1990s.

While the hotel’s decor certainly recalls its opulent past  – with marble-floored lobbies, four-poster beds, and plush velvet furnishings – its modern amenities add a modern but sophisticated touch. With a luxurious spa and an infinity pool that overlooks the Bosphorus, guests can swim while taking in mesmerizing views across the strait, where Europe meets Asia.

Top suite to book: Sultan Suite

As can be expected given the hotel’s royal roots, the Sultan Suite is one of the most exclusive accommodations in the city, continuing to play host to today’s world leaders and dignitaries.
