The Right Way to Wear Aloha Print Menswear

By Benjamin Liong Setiawan

This story originally appeared in the May/June 2018 issue of Elite Traveler.

Hawaiian shirts and large tropical prints were ubiquitous on the spring runways. But how do you wear them without looking like you’re headed to the surf shack? We’ll highlight two ways to wear these eye-catching prints to make sure you’re not mistaken for Magnum PI–era Tom Selleck. Kim Jones at Louis Vuitton paired his Hawaiian shirt with a classic trench and navy pants to ground the look. Sometimes you’ll want to go bold with a floral print and wear it with color, as Paul Smith did with these magenta trousers. The shirt is far from a traditional floral print; it features sea life, including coral and fish. The bright accessories and green shoes are ready to go in any tropical locale.
