With Earth Day on its way, this month we celebrate going green. To do your part for the planet, think beyond planting a tree and consider revamping your beauty cabinet too. Natural beauty brands boast formulas with eco-friendly ingredients that have the same gentle effect on your skin.
For those who worry that transitioning to a natural beauty regimen means a loss of luxe creams and serums, think again. Today’s natural lines are debunking the myth that harsh chemicals are needed for a product that’s both pretty and potent. Elite Traveler’s Olivia Cuccaro speaks with Tata Harper, founder of the eponymous skincare, cosmetics, and aromatherapy brand, about the importance of natural beauty this Earth Day.
Why is natural skincare important to you?
I try to go synthetic-free in everything with the precautionary principle in mind. We don’t have a lot of ingredient regulation in the US, and we don’t know which synthetic ingredients may turn out to have health risks, so I think avoiding synthetic ingredients completely is the healthiest way to go. Your skin is your largest organ, so it’s important to really think about what you put on it every day and how it affects your overall health.
How does your brand commit to natural beauty?
We are completely, 100 percent natural and nontoxic. We are very rigorous in our ingredient sourcing – we won’t even use ingredients that use synthetics or GMOs in their extraction processes – and we formulate and manufacture everything ourselves in our facilities in Vermont so we can ensure freshness and quality.
Part of being natural for us is also about being sustainable in our ingredient sourcing, as well as with our packaging. We use infinitely recyclable glass bottles, post-consumer recycled papers and environmentally friendly inks.
What do you wish people knew about natural beauty products?
People often question whether naturals are as effective as synthetics. In reality, the most commonly used synthetic ingredients were created as cheaper and more predictable versions of natural ingredients, which are much more expensive and delicate to work with. Why cut corners and use an imitation when you can use the real thing?
What are your favorite products for spring?
When the weather warms up and the sun starts coming out again I want to glow right along with it, so I love to do a mini-facial for myself by polishing my dry skin with the Regenerating Cleanser and layering the Resurfacing Mask on top. I leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and I swear my skin glows for days.
