A new breed of expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages sails year-round to destinations from Antarctica’s ice fields to the Mediterranean and Caribbean.
Its fleet of three intimate yachts, each carrying fewer than 200 guests, is purpose-built for exploration, bringing a boutique feel to the luxury cruising market. At the helm, CEO and president James Rodriguez reflects on how Atlas stands out from the competition, the hurdles of building a young brand and the voyages that left a lasting mark on him.
How has the cruise industry changed in the last 20 years?
The industry has grown and diversified tremendously, with many brands differentiating themselves through their ships, inclusions and destinations, giving explorers the broadest selection of options ever. In expedition cruising, especially, we’ve seen significant expansion and awareness of reaching places that were once limited-access.
Today, more luxurious ships, like the intimate yachts offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages, bring guests to these remote destinations — an experience far beyond the older, scientific-style vessels that once defined the category.
You joined Atlas Ocean Voyages a year after the first yacht launched. What’s been the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome to get the business to where it is today?
Brand awareness has been our greatest challenge. Atlas is still in its early stages, and much of our focus is on building recognition for our year-round expedition offerings. Once travelers experience us, they immediately understand the difference — we just need to get our story in front of more explorers.
How is Atlas Ocean Voyages able to separate itself from the competition?
Atlas is redefining what expedition cruising means. Beyond our traditional Polar Expeditions, we’ve introduced Epicurean Expeditions in the Mediterranean and Cultural Expeditions in Northern Europe and the Caribbean. We’ve expanded the concept of expeditions to go beyond Zodiac landings, creating truly immersive journeys.
Epicurean Expeditions bring the flavors of the Mediterranean to life as guests explore regional gastronomic traditions alongside our ‘expedition’ team of guest chefs and culinary experts, with tastings, demonstrations and authentic culinary experiences ashore and on board.
Cultural Expeditions highlight the rich history and heritage of the destination, and feature astronomers, cultural experts and local storytellers who share folklore, traditions and insights that deepen each destination experience. Together, these offerings create a richer, more immersive approach to exploration.
How does Atlas Ocean Voyages deliver a world-class off-ship experience?
We’re hyper-focused on destination immersion. On our Polar Expeditions, our team of 17 seasoned experts ensures that every landing is memorable and life-changing, fostering strong bonds among our guests.
Across all our voyages, we also include a complimentary Atlas Immersive Experience — a special, one-of-a-kind event unique to each sailing — that further elevates the journey.
Atlas Ocean Voyages launched polar expeditions for its first Antarctic season in 2022. What are the extra challenges that come with operating in a new environment like that?
Antarctica demands meticulous preparation and flexibility. Weather, ice and environmental regulations can change the plan at any moment, so we built a world-class Expedition Team with the expertise to adapt quickly and maximize every opportunity.
Ensuring guest safety while delivering extraordinary experiences in such a remote environment requires meticulous planning and precision.
It’s impossible to discuss a trip to Antarctica without discussing sustainability. How is Atlas Ocean Voyages keeping its impact to a minimum?
Sustainability is central to how we operate. Our yachts are small, intimate and purpose-built to minimize environmental impact. We adhere strictly to IAATO guidelines, limit landing group sizes to protect fragile ecosystems and employ advanced technologies to reduce emissions.
Most importantly, we foster awareness — our guests return home as ambassadors for these pristine places, inspired to protect them.
Have you had the opportunity to experience any of the journeys, and if so, is there a particular one that stands out?
Yes — my very first expedition was Antarctica, and it completely changed my perspective. Experiencing it with my family, including my three boys, was unforgettable. To see their awe and excitement while exploring the White Continent was truly life-changing, and it reaffirmed why we do what we do.
What achievement are you are most proud of during your time at Atlas Ocean Voyages?
I’m most proud of the team we’ve built — a group of cruise industry veterans passionate about creating something truly special. Travel changes lives, and our guests tell us again and again how their time with Atlas has been transformative. Hearing their feedback and knowing they want us to expand to even more destinations inspires me every day.
What are the benefits and challenges of being a younger expedition cruise company?
The benefit is agility — we have the freedom to innovate, tell our story authentically, and shape what expedition cruising means for today’s traveler. The challenge is education. Many people still think of expeditions as only polar or rugged scientific experiences. We’re redefining that perception, showing that expeditions can be luxurious, immersive and culturally rich while still delivering authentic exploration.
What can you see on the horizon for the future of luxury expedition cruising?
I see continued growth, but with a focus on quality over quantity. Travelers are increasingly seeking small-group, one-of-a-kind experiences rather than large-scale cruising. At Atlas, our focus is on delivering flawless, consistent service from booking through the voyage, while expanding our destination footprint.
As new destinations open to smaller ships, the future of expedition cruising is about uniqueness, intimacy and creating stories guests will cherish and share for a lifetime.
