Following the record-breaking sale of Paul Newman’s Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona, Christie’s has announced its upcoming Evening of Exceptional Watches Live Auction will take place in December. Once again, the auction will highlight timepieces once owned by American icons — this time, an athlete and an aviator.
Heralded as one of the best baseball players in history, Joe DiMaggio is remembered by his 56-game hitting streak and his Patek Philippe. Made in 1947, DiMaggio’s Patek Philippe Reference 130 features the functionality of a chronograph with elegant gold Breguet numerals beautifully set against a silvered dial. An 18K gold case is accompanied by the original Patek Philippe original strap. Estimated $150,000 to $300,000.
Amelia Earhart broke ground as the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and was gifted the watch up for auction by fellow aviator Amy Johnson. The back of the watch’s silver case is engraved: To Amelia, In Sincere Admiration, Amy.” The watch was presented to Earhart in 1932, the same year she made history by flying alone over the Atlantic. Estimated $60,000 to $120,000.
An array of fine and rare Rolex and Patek Philippe timepieces will also be up for auction, as well as a selection of jewels and watches once owned by former President Dwight D Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower.
An Evening of Exceptional Watches will be held at 6:30pm on December 7, 2017. Christie’s New York is located at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10020. For more information, please visit christies.com.
