You would think that when a leading jewelry house has been making some of the finest of the finer things since 1858 – and with its signature line celebrating its 20th anniversary this year – that innovation would begin to show signs of slowing down. Not for Boucheron.
In a groundbreaking fusion of art, technology and emotion, Boucheron has unveiled its latest creation, the Quatre 5D Memory Ring. This latest innovation by the French Maison captures something as intangible as sound and preserves it for eternity, encapsulating the memory of the Atlantic Ocean within a wearable work of art.
The visionary behind this concept, Claire Choisne, Boucheron’s creative director, drew inspiration from her childhood by the sea. In her words: “Through the Quatre 5D Memory ring, I wanted to encapsulate, for billions of years, a memory of my childhood spent by the ocean. This piece proves that we have still not reached the boundaries of jewelry, and we will continue to push them, so as to fully express the strength of our creative vision.”

But how does one truly capture sound in a ring? Boucheron relied on 5D Memory, an advanced optical storage process that allows up to 100 megabytes of data to be recorded within the ring’s material. Using a nano-structuring technique, laser engravers intricately inscribed the sound of the Atlantic Ocean into the ring in binary code.
Unlike traditional engravings, the data is embedded within the material itself, ensuring its preservation for future generations. This audio work was developed in partnership with IRCAM, the prestigious institute for acoustics and music research at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The waves of the Atlantic were transformed into a sound composition, which now lies at the core of the Clou de Paris motif on the ring.

Yet, despite the ultra-modern process, the Quatre 5D Memory Ring remains unmistakably Boucheron. Featuring the four iconic codes of the Quatre collection, this time they are sculpted in Glassomer, a revolutionary silica glass known for its optical clarity and durability. This unique material, developed in collaboration with the company Glassomer, was chosen for its ability to last for billions of years, ensuring that the ring’s engraved memory endures for the distant future. The only departure from this ultra-modern medium is the classic touch of diamonds set in white gold, adding a traditional element to the avant-garde design.
“Quatre 5D Memory’ perfectly embodies Boucheron’s vision of pushing boundaries,” Hélène Poulit-Duquesne, CEO of Maison Boucheron, said upon the release. “By succeeding in encapsulating an audio work within a jewelry design, we are exploring new territories of expression and opening up limitless realms of possibility. The Quatre 5D Memory ring becomes the vessel that holds a memory, an emotion, that is given to future generations.”
