The Suite
Nowhere is Fairmont Le Château Frontenac's romantic spirit felt more strongly than in the Van Horne Suite. Named after Sir William Cornelius Van Horne, the railway magnate behind the Canadian Pacific Railway and the creation of Château Frontenac, the suite subtly references the hotel's railway heritage through rich dark wood paneling, ornate tiled fireplaces, and artwork inspired by Canada's golden age of travel. There's an old-world grandeur that feels entirely at home as the top suite within one of the country's most recognizable and historical landmarks.
The room’s expansive layout encompasses a master bedroom, elegant living room, formal dining room, powder room, and an all-marble bathroom, offering plenty of space to settle in. Yet it is the suite's position within the château that defines the experience. Perched high above Quebec City's fortified streets and centuries-old rooftops, it enjoys some of the finest views in the city, with large windows framing the Saint Lawrence River as it winds past the old town. From first light over the water to the glow of Old Quebec after dark, it offers a perspective few addresses in the city can rival.
Designed to accommodate up to four guests, the suite also features a dedicated workspace and can be connected to an adjoining room for larger groups or families seeking additional space and privacy. Guests staying in the Van Horne Suite enjoy Fairmont Gold privileges, including access to the private lounge, complimentary breakfast, evening canapes, and a dedicated concierge team.
Perfect for entertaining, relaxing, or simply soaking up the suite’s historical character and unrivaled vantage point above Quebec City, the Van Horne Suite offers a stay that feels inseparable from the story of Château Frontenac itself.

The Hotel
Sitting high above Quebec City's fortified old town like something from a fairy tale, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is one of Canada's most recognizable and historic hotels – so much so that it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1981. Its copper turrets and castle-like silhouette have watched over the Saint Lawrence River for more than a century, becoming as much a part of the city's identity as the cobbled streets and centuries-old stone buildings that surround it.
Opened in 1893 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the hotel was conceived as part of a network of grand railway hotels designed to encourage luxury travel across the country. More than 130 years later, it remains the crown jewel of the collection. Over the decades, it has welcomed an extraordinary roster of guests, including generations of the British royal family, heads of state, Hollywood stars, and international dignitaries. During World War II, it also hosted the Quebec Conferences, where Allied leaders including Winston Churchill and Franklin D Roosevelt, met to discuss wartime strategy.
Today, the hotel balances this rich history with the amenities expected of a modern luxury resort. Dining is spread across six restaurants and bars, ranging from Champlain's contemporary take on Quebecois cuisine to the refined cocktail program at 1608 Wine & Cheese Bar. Elsewhere, Moment Spa offers massages, facials, and wellness treatments, while an indoor pool, fitness center, and guided historical tours provide plenty to occupy guests.
Yet despite its size and stature, staying here feels intrinsically romantic. Whether wandering hand-in-hand through the Unesco-listed neighborhood below, settling into one of the hotel's restaurants for a long dinner, or simply admiring the river views from above, there is an undeniable sense of fantasy given to every moment.
