CAIMARI OLIVE FAIR 2015

By Neharika Padala

Caimari Olive Fair

NOVEMBER 21, 2015

Despite the triumph of tourism in Mallorca since the 1950s, agriculture remains a key source of revenue for the island and harvest fairs are still a dearly held tradition.

One that stands out from the rest is held in the pretty northern village of Caimari and was recently picked by the Guardian as one of the top ten gastronomic festivals in Europe. The village square is carpeted with olive leaves and filled with stalls selling delicious local products while a mule pulls the vast stone olive press to extract the ‘liquid gold’. While olives are the headline act, there is an array of other treats on offer, including a traditional spicy sausage – a favorite of the King of Spain – homemade cakes and excellent Mallorcan wine. If you are traveling as a family, the sheep dog trials and pony rides are always a big hit with the kids.
