TOLEDO
To escape from the hustle and bustle of Madrid, request a customized tour of Toledo, 70 kilometers south of the city.
A designated UNESCO world heritage site, Toledo is the optimum destination for both a culinary and a cultural experience. First, sample the wine and olive oil of La Mancha in the province of Toledo, followed by an indulgent Michelin star lunch. Then enter historical Toledo, a one time capital of the Spanish Empire. Historically a city of three cultures, Toledo’s twisting medieval streets accommodate mosques, synagogues and churches. The city is crammed with original artwork by Europe’s great masters, from Velázquez to Rubens and most famously El Greco, who dwelt in Toledo for 27 years. Visit the Catedral Primada Santa María de Toledo to see El Greco’s illustrious El Expolio de Cristo – the disrobing of Christ. As a hunting region, the best gastronomy in Toledo is traditionally game, particularly quail and partridge. Toledo’s real delicacy however is marzipan, so ask your tour guide to direct you to the best marzipan houses, and savor the sweet almond treat.
