Opened February 2017
The second New York City property opened by Firmdale Hotels, The Whitby lies at the heart of Upper Midtown Manhattan amid an abundance of boutiques, restaurants, galleries and museums, and just moments from the greenery of Central Park. Just like its sister developments, The Whitby exhibits the distinct style of the hotel group’s co-owner Kit Kemp, whose award-winning designs are recognized for their contemporary use of patterns and texture; artworks feature throughout the property, with a different color scheme in each room. Across the hotel’s 16 floors, each room and suite benefits from floor-to-ceiling windows, with many featuring private terraces. Taking up the entire top floor is the two-bedroom Whitby Suite that provides the most exclusive stay, with spacious terraces affording the hotel’s best views. The Ned
London
Opened April 2017
The first collaboration between Nick Jones, the founder of the achingly cool Soho House, and Andrew Zobler, founder of the Sydell Group known for creating world-class properties, The Ned incorporates the best of the respective groups’ signature styles – classic design, comfort, unmatched service and unique gastronomy. A former Midland Bank originally designed in 1924 by Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens, the Grade-I listed building has been fully restored to its original grandeur. With the building standing unused for more than a decade, restoration work has taken over four years and many of the structure’s original features have remained, including old safety deposit signage in a main stairwell and wood-panelled bank teller’s cabins acting as booth seating in the restaurants. The eighth floor rooftop is reserved for Ned’s Club members and features a heated pool and terrace with sweeping views of London. Marvel at Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London and 30 St Mary Axe, also known as the “Gherkin.” The Lutyens Suite, named after the building’s architect, is ideal for entertaining and relaxing. The extensive 1,076 sq ft suite has two en suite bedrooms, a bar and dining space, and allows guests private access to the rooftop to take in the panoramic views.

Amanemu
Ise-Shima, Japan
Opened March 2016
Tucked into the forested landscape of Ise-Shima National Park, Amanemu offers total seclusion and stellar views over Ago Bay. In this glorious setting, the contemporary design of architect Kerry Hill has been brought together with the principles of Japanese living, integrating natural materials from warm wood to grey slate and white stone. As a hot-spring resort, the spa lies at its heart, combining Japanese tradition with the latest wellbeing expertise, encompassing a patchwork of outdoor onsen for guests to soak in by day or view a star-filled sky at night. Inside, each space feels light and airy, and has been designed to bring the outdoors in through the integration of floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors. Fittingly, the restaurant here places the focus on Japanese cuisine, taking great pride in ingredients such as Matsusaka Wagyu, Ise lobster and abalone. Evenings are then spent in the sumptuous lounge and bar, which leads out to the infinity pool, or in the sunken terrace for candlelit drinks by a crackling fire. The greatest luxury here lies in the way a stay enhances the experience of being in this culturally and gastronomically unique coastal region.
