When you think of Jerusalem, you may think of religious pilgrimages and ancient history. However over the years, the Israeli capital has also become very well known for its cuisine. Encompassing a little bit of everything, the food in Jerusalem varies from traditional Jewish dishes such as Israeli mujadara (a popular rice and lentil dish) and sabich (a traditional Mizrahi Jewish sandwich); to Mediterranean falafel and paella.
Anna
At the heart of Jerusalem sits ‘The Ticho House’. Once home to Anna Ticho, one of Israel’s most prominent painters from the 1920s, the historic house now functions as a museum, restaurant and cultural center. On the top floor of the building is Anna. This jaw dropping restaurant offers an exceptional variety of seasonal ingredients and food, featuring dishes such as gnocchi and fish carpaccio. Not only is Anna one of the best restaurants in Jerusalem, but it also helps disadvantaged students learn to cook and gain experience in the kitchen.
Chakra
Chakra is known as one of the best restaurants in Jerusalem. It is popular for its large alfresco dining area and lively atmosphere. An excellent example of Eran Peretz highly skilled techniques and in-depth knowledge of spices, Chakra boasts an expansive selection of seafood dishes and a wide-ranging wine list. Peretz’s Italian-inspired menu features homemade pasta dishes and bruschetta. The layout is very modern, with diners organized into semi-circular booths with a view of the open kitchen where the staff are hard at work preparing some of the city’s most impressive dishes.
Machneyuda
Inspiration for two of the most celebrated restaurants in London (The Palomar and The Barbary), Machneyuda is one of the best restaurants in Jerusalem. Its energetic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern atmosphere attracts countless customers (with the extraordinary food also playing a part in bringing in the crowds). All the ingredients are from the neighboring market, ensuring Machneyuda’s food is as fresh as possible. Expect dishes such as polenta and octopus and entrecote steak.
Gabriel
Named after the angel Gabriel, messenger of God and His right hand man. This delicious Kosher restaurant offers impeccable French-inspired cuisine in a classy and charming atmosphere, suited for both a professional meal or a night out with friends. Popular dishes include chateaubriand, smoked eggplant and… . Alternatively, if you would like something a bit different, feel free to ask the chef for his daily special.
The Eucalyptus
Moshe Basson is one of the most famous chefs in Jerusalem. His family planted a eucalyptus tree in the center of the Israeli capital, before moving away for several years. Upon their return the tree had grown in size. Under that tree the first Eucalyptus restaurant was opened by Moshe and his family. The Eucalyptus is a Kosher restaurant occupying part of the Artist Quarter of Jerusalem. It focuses on modernized interpretations of traditional Israeli cuisine. All of Basson’s herbs and spices grow in the hills of Jerusalem and Judea, just as they did centuries ago. The menu offers high quality popular dishes such as the red lentil and stuffed fish. Alternatively, the tasting menu is known to be the best part of the menu as not only does it have exquisite choices, but it also has several options for vegetarian customers.
