Longtime Krug lover and legendary host, New York-based fashion designer Naeem Khan is an aficionado in bringing together food, music and champagne with celebratory aplomb. Here, the acclaimed designer gives us his tips on hosting a spring celebration, which naturally involves plenty of Krug champagne.
The Venue
“Hosting a spring entertaining party is the perfect way to gather family and friends as the weather warms up. Rooftop soirees are always visually beautiful, especially if you are hosting in a busy city such as New York or Miami, where I split most of my time. I typically prefer to host at a venue that matches the general aesthetic of the particular evening I am hosting.”
Spring Dining and Krug Pairing
“For spring, I enjoy indulging in Krug Rosé. Krug Rosé boasts a broad and extensive aromatic palette, typically not found in a rosé champagne. As you sip, there is a discovery in harmonies of puff pastries and berry tart, which ultimately develop towards honey and citrus fruits. This champagne in particular is remarkable on its own or alongside savory meats like foie gras, lamb, or venison. I love to cook and create special pairings for my guests to elevate the experience.”
Cocktails
“I always serve Krug, but I enjoy serving a sipping tequila for cocktail lovers as well. Casa Dragones is a favorite of mine, shaken, no ice, but served crystal cold in a chilled glass.”
Music
“Since partnering with Krug, it has been so fascinating to learn all of the musical components involved when pairing the playlist with champagne. Depending on what champagne and vintage you are drinking, the music should reflect the way sipping on a glass of champagne makes you feel. For example, Krug Grande Cuvée, the most classic bottle from the brand, boasts a combination of over 120 wines and provides you with several different notes, like hazelnut and citrus. The spirit of this particular bottle projects feelings of liveliness, so an upbeat song with an array of instruments incorporated within would pair nicely. I love Leslie Odom Jr, from Hamilton, we recently partnered on an evening dinner party with him and he created and performed the most amazing musical sets to pair with the Krug we were sipping. It was a magical evening with many close friends and our gracious hosts, Hope and Robert Smith.”
Extra Touches
“Details matter when hosting. The lighting is major and should be ambient, lots of candles. It also depends on where I’m hosting. Near the ocean I enjoy Diptyque’s Roses and Freesia scents and near the woods, I enjoy their Figuier candle. Overall, it’s about creating a total experience.”
