The Most Opulent Hotel Suites in the UK

The UK is known for its iconic grand hotels and impeccable hospitality, but which are the most expensive?

By Kim Ayling

Delving into our extensive hotel database, we have shortlisted the most expensive hotel suites in the UK. To ensure fairness and accuracy, this ranking is based on cost per square foot, helping travelers understand where their money goes the furthest – as well as where it buys them the least.

Home to some of the world’s most iconic hotels, including the Ritz and Claridge’s, it will come as no surprise to find out that London occupies every spot on our shortlist of the most expensive suites in the UK. From chic townhouse apartments to lavish hotel rooms, the UK capital is not short of luxury suites – provided you have the money to spend.

One surprise arising from this list is the increased value travelers can enjoy when visiting the UK, compared with the US. None of the most expensive suites in the US (all but one of which is in New York City) drop below $11 per sq ft, while in the UK, none surpass $10. Considering the impeccable and classic hospitality seen in British hotels, in relative terms, this seems remarkably reasonable.

Launched in its entirety next month, our comprehensive top-suites database will contain details of over 400 accommodations from across the world and will be fully searchable, allowing you to narrow down rooms and hotels depending on your chosen criteria.

1. Mandarin Oriental Penthouse, Mandarin Oriental London – $9.10 per sq ft

With prices per night starting at $43,500 for a total of 4,779 sq ft, the Mandarin Oriental Penthouse comfortably sits at the top of our shortlist of the most expensive hotel suites in the UK. And with the hotel occupying one of London’s most esteemed addresses and a recent major renovation, this price is unsurprising.

Designed to emulate a chic London apartment, the three-bedroom Mandarin Penthouse overlooks Hyde Park, with its five rooftop terraces perfectly situated to absorb the city atmosphere from above. Inside, the decor leaves no detail overlooked; beautiful touches such as silk wall coverings and nature-inspired artwork can be enjoyed throughout, with subtle flashes of gold complementing the refined color palette.

Of course, beautiful rooms are not enough to warrant almost $50,000 per night. Guests at the Mandarin Oriental London can rest assured that every want and need will be catered for by the highly skilled staff, with the levels of service going above and beyond in true old-school London style.

2. Crescent Pavilion Penthouse, The Berkeley – $8.84 per sq ft

Per square foot, the second most expensive suite in the UK is the sublime Crescent Pavilion Penthouse at The Berkeley, which will set you back just over $20,000 per night. As the hotel has stood as a London institution for over 100 years, guests would be forgiven for worrying that it may not suit 21st century tastes – however, thanks to a complete refit by esteemed designer André Fu, the Crescent Pavilion Penthouse is dripping in contemporary style.

Indoor-outdoor living typically conjures images of the Maldives – however, the Crescent Pavilion Penthouse transports the concept of bringing the outside into the space with floor-to-ceiling windows that open in their entirety onto the wraparound terrace.

In addition to the outside area, the 2,368-sq-ft penthouse offers two indoor living spaces, a dining room for eight and a bar area, creating the ultimate spot for hosting. If guests do plan to entertain, the in-suite dining offering courtesy of Marcus Wareing, chef patron of Michelin-starred Marcus, cannot be missed.

3. The Apartment, The Connaught – $7.93 per sq ft

Tucked in the heart of Mayfair, The Connaught has the totality of London at its fingertips. Although all the hotel’s suites are impressive, with The Mews earning a spot on our list of the 100 suites, it is The Apartment that works out the most expensive per square foot.

As the name suggests, The Apartment is designed to exude a residential feel. The interior is charming and stylish, with flashes of gold creating a suitably luxurious finish. Outside guests will find two terraces with views across the London rooftops, making them the ideal spot to enjoy an alfresco breakfast or a glass of champagne.

Back inside is a spacious dining room with room for eight. If you plan to host, make use of a personal Connaught chef and bartender, who are available on request to create a bespoke food and drink menu. Considering the Connaught Bar is regarded as one of the best in the world, you can rest assured that you and your guests will be blown away.

4. The Royal Suite, Claridge’s – $7.64 per sq ft

The Royal Suite at Claridge’s must be seen to be believed. Immersed in rich history, the decor is suitably regal, with many of the design motifs reflecting the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, for which the celebratory dinner was held at Claridge’s.

Nods to Britain’s varied history are featured throughout the suite’s four rooms, with an original Gilbert and Sullivan grand piano sitting in the lounge and exclusive Cowshed products in the bathroom. The impeccable attention to detail continues with hand-painted floral details that capture the national flowers of the UK by the acclaimed artisans of de Gournay lining the dining room walls.

With every inch of The Royal Suite succumbing to this sense of elevated style and grandeur, and the addition of round-the-clock butler service, it comes as no surprise that Claridge’s top accommodation is one of the most expensive suites in the UK.

5. Royal Suite, InterContinental London Park Lane – $7.33 per sq ft

Sitting on the site of 145 Piccadilly, which acted as Queen Elizabeth II’s childhood residence, London InterContinental is steeped in history. The hotel’s 2,117-sq-ft Royal Suite is part of the new By Appointment collection, which offers a series of exquisitely designed rooms that can be configured to suit the needs of individual guests.

Although it secures the final spot on our roundup of the most expensive hotel suites, at $15,525, the Royal Suite is overshadowed in terms of price per night by the likes of the Sterling Suite at The Langham and the Corinthia’s Royal Penthouse Suite (neither of which made this list). However, the timeless design and host of amenities are to thank for the increased price per square foot at London InterContinental.

Guests at the Royal Suite are also privy to complimentary access to Club InterContinental, inviting members to enjoy breakfast, afternoon tea, canapés and evening drinks, as well access to the hotel’s seventh-floor lounge with views across the city.
