One&Only Cape Town Unveils Extensive Refurb

The redesign is a celebration of South Africa’s landscape and heritage.

By Irenie Forshaw

One&Only has breathed new life into its Cape Town outpost, unveiling the results of an extensive refurbishment. The luxury brand left no stone unturned with the revamp, updating the interiors of the property’s 133 rooms and suites, as well as the entrance lobby, bar and lounge.

Situated on the V&A waterfront with incredible views of Table Mountain, One&Only Cape Town welcomed its first guests in 2017. The redesign is a celebration of South Africa’s beautiful landscape and rich heritage.

To this end, the team worked closely with local artists to decorate the property with one-of-a-kind pieces. “This is an incredibly exciting project for the One&Only Cape Town team and a testament to our confidence in the positive future direction of South African tourism,” said Anne Scott, general manager at One&Only Cape Town.

“We have proudly incorporated local suppliers and artisans to create something magical – paying homage to African culture while retaining the innate One&Only ultra-luxury ethos.”

The rooms themselves are decorated with a warm, earthy color palette. Inspired by traditional North African mud cloth, the entrances are adorned in colorful Kente cloth, while each accommodation is dotted with handmade ceramics, gemstone-shaped shields, and beaded pots crafted by Zimbabwe-born Richard Madongwe.

In a nod to the Cape Kelp Forest – an underwater jungle fringing the shores of northern Cape Town – the carpets and cushions feature a swirling ocean-blue design. Other thoughtful touches include the frames of the bedroom mirrors which have been hand carved by sculptor Ben Tuge in Johannesburg and the spacious bathrooms boasting enormous free-standing soaking tubs. Floor-to-ceiling windows reveal sweeping views of Table Mountain and the marina below.

One&Only Cape Town has also revamped the Vista Bar and Lounge, commissioning local Kenyan artist Stanislav Trzebinski to create a sculpture for the restaurant based on the local legend behind the creation of Table Mountain.

As for dining, revered South African chef Karen Dudley has crafted a new plant-led menu with dishes spanning everything from papaya salad and grilled tiger prawns to fresh Saldanha bay mussels and crispy roasted gochujang cauliflower.
