Heesen Yachts Unveils its Most Sustainable Superyacht Yet

Scheduled for delivery in early 2025, Project Orion represents a leap forward in sustainable yachting.

By Grace Taylor

Dutch superyacht builder Heesen Yachts has announced its latest achievement in sustainable luxury, Project Orion. Scheduled for delivery in early 2025, the 164-ft superyacht represents a leap forward in sustainable yachting.

Crafted from lightweight aluminum and featuring advanced hybrid propulsion, Project Orion boasts an impressive 30% reduction in environmental impact compared to traditional motor yachts of the same size. The innovative hybrid system not only enhances efficiency but also ensures virtually silent cruising, with noise levels comparable to softly falling rain. This unique engine system allows guests to immerse themselves in tranquility, enjoying their surroundings without interruption, while the yacht transitions between locations.

Project Orion is the third vessel in Heesen’s advanced 164-ft FDHF aluminum series with hybrid propulsion, following the successful delivery of Home in 2017, the world’s first fast-displacement superyacht equipped with hybrid propulsion.

“Building yachts with a reduced environmental impact is part of our long-term strategy,” says Mark Cavendish, Heesen’s chief commercial officer. “Following the success of charter yacht Home, we see that increasingly more clients appreciate Heesen’s hybrid solutions, especially due to their quietness.”

Project Orion‘s memorable design, envisioned by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, features a near-vertical bow and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the interiors with natural light. The contemporary interior, crafted by Italian designer Cristiano Gatto, is customizable to meet the owner’s preferences, blending luxury with sustainability.

“We conduct a lot of research into the materials we use. For example, we use leather that is certified from the food industry because it is a product that would otherwise be thrown away,” says Gatto.

Onboard, Heesen ensures that luxury and comfort are not compromised in the pursuit of sustainability. Amenities include a large swim platform seamlessly connected to a sauna and gym area, an expansive sundeck, and a master suite with stunning floor-to-ceiling windows.

“The yacht industry is constantly investing in new technologies and solutions for a more sustainable future. Alternative fuels like methanol and hydrogen, although promising, will take time to become available in sufficient quantities and require major technical modifications to the design of yachts. Project Orion is one of the most efficient yachts currently available on the market and will be on the water from next year,” adds Cavendish.

Available for sale, Project Orion represents a significant leap forward in sustainable yachting, setting a new standard for eco-conscious luxury on the high seas.
