Along with the seclusion only a private island could afford, each of these prime patches of land excels in both location and the assets it encompasses, not to forget those picture-perfect views. We take a look at the stand-out private islands for sale within Caribbean waters, and those that are just moments from America’s East Coast.
Bonefish Cay, the Bahamas
$9.75 million
Situated within the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas, the 13.5-acre Bonefish Cay exhibits the white-sand beaches the Caribbean is so famous for. In recent years, the previously deserted island has been transformed into an exclusive resort, with five buildings encompassing two luxury owner’s suites, along with six other suites to accommodate up to 16 guests. With its sheltered setting, verdant interior, and coral reef to snorkel to just offshore, the island is a stellar pocket of the region.
Buck Island, British Virgin Islands
Price on Application
The 43-acre Buck Island lies just off the coast of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, and since the mid ‘90s it has been gradually transformed into a luxury retreat. Currently for private use only, the island is home to a seven-bedroom residence, which spans 17,000 square feet, with unique design features such as a spiral staircase that was inspired by a nautilus shell. The master bedroom commands panoramic views over the Sir Frances Drake Channel.
Tavern Island, Connecticut
$10.9 million
Spread across 3.5 acres, this tiny island is an idyllic private island retreat, with year-round access from a separate mainland property. From the Tudor-style residence with sweeping views, to the landscaped gardens and private beaches, the entire patch of land is immaculate, with a boathouse, pool and teahouse within the vicinity too. Heidi Klum is one famous name to have reportedly shown interest.
The Thimble Islands, Connecticut
$78 million
As the Thimble Islands go on sale, buyers have the unique opportunity to own eight islands just off the East Coast. Within these eight islands lie seven residences, along with a number of additional outbuildings. But, the main attraction is Roger’s Island where a mansion sits at the highest point, surrounded by landscaped French gardens with a swimming pool, tennis courts and golf course. The islands are a five to ten-minute journey from the coast, and from Manhattan they can be reached in just 20 minutes by helicopter.
Ballast Key, Florida
$15.8 million
Just nine miles to the south of Key West, this 26-acre island boasts an undeniably desirable setting, with a five-bedroom mansion and three-bedroom guesthouse on the land, and it’s the only private island within the Key West National Wildlife Reserve. With its prime location, Ballast Key has attracted plenty of attention over the years, even being featured in the 1989 James Bond movie A View to Kill. The island is a short helicopter or boat ride from both Key West and Cuba.
