Don’t miss out on Frankfurt’s wealth of attractions and adventures

The Römerberg is the most beautiful square in Frankfurt. Steeped in history and bursting with attractions, it is the must-see sight of this wonderfully diverse city.

During the 12th century the Römerberg firmly established itself as the epicenter of German importance, drawing merchants and visitors from all over Europe. Throughout the succeeding centuries the significance of the Römerberg to a flourishing Frankfurt was underlined by the construction of Zum Römer, Frankfurt’s first city hall, where emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were crowned. This historic square has been beautifully restored since its partial destruction during World War II and offers a fascinating glimpse into Frankfurt’s rich history. The Römerberg’s other attractions include the Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen, the Fountain of Justice built in 1543, Alte Nikolaikirche, a small gothic church and the Ostzeile, a row of six picturesque half-timbered houses that are reconstructions of the medieval originals.

he Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, known internationally as the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, is held biennially in Frankfurt.

One of the largest motor shows in the world, it takes pride of place in the city’s event calendar and has a rich history of introducing cutting-edge automotive concepts to the world. The first show took place in 1897 in Berlin and helped to make the automobile a socially acceptable means of transport. The next 15 years introduced a variety of ground-breaking concepts; in 1951 the event moved to its current home where it became a true international event and in 1961 the seat belt and legendary BMW 1500 were introduced to record crowds of 950,000. The highlights of the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show 2013 are hugely anticipated and shrouded in secrecy. The 2011 show featured 900 exhibitors and a new ‘Hall of Electromobility’ that showcased the latest developments in green cars.

At the very heart of Frankfurt lies the Palm Garden, a wonderfully lush oasis where the strains of modern day life can be forgotten.

Completed in 1871 the Palmengarten, as it is known in German, brings the world’s most beautiful plants to one of Europe’s most modern trade capitals. Visitors to this urban paradise can explore numerous gardens, such as the rockery with its imposing waterfall, the vivid rhododendron garden, a colorful tropical underwater world and, in the summer, the 12,900 square foot cactus garden. The Palm Garden also features a tropicarium, which replicates the warm tropical climes of monsoon jungles, and a sub-Antarctic House where you will experience the cold temperatures of the southern hemisphere. There is something at the Palm Garden for everyone: regular tours and lectures are held in the stunning glass houses, while playgrounds, mini golf and a small railway can occupy children for hours. There is also a picturesque pond complete with rowing boats fit for the romantic.
