The Numbers Behind this Year’s Top 100 Suites

The Elite Traveler Top 100 Suites covers a complete spectrum of modern luxury.

By Katharine Swindells

To celebrate the upcoming release of this year’s Top 100 Suites 2022, we’ve delved into the numbers behind the world’s most exclusive accommodations. While every suite, villa and estate featured in the Top 100 meets an exceptional standard of luxury, the price and size of each one varies considerably. From enchanting yurts costing under $1,000 per night to the Hong Kong penthouse that will set you back a small fortune, the Elite Traveler Top 100 Suites covers a complete spectrum of modern luxury.

The five biggest suites in this year’s Top 100 Suites 2022 are all in the Asia-Pacific region, and the largest is the Hilltop Villa on Laucala Island, Fiji. The Laucala Island resort takes up just a third of the 3,500-acre island, with the surrounding rainforest left untouched.

The Hilltop Estate is made up of three villas, with a two-tier swimming pool that offers panoramic views across the island. With 130,000 sq ft of exclusive space, utmost privacy is guaranteed. There is even a personal runway for discrete arrivals. Hilltop Villa is also one of the most expensive suites, at $52,000 a night.

The second-largest suite is also in the Asia-Pacific islands, The Owner's Estate, Nihi Sumba, in Sumba, Indonesia. An hour's flight from Bali, and then a further 90-minute drive, take you to the remote tropical paradise of Nihi Sumba, with unbroken sea views that stretch thousands of miles to Antarctica. The Owner’s Estate is spread over 56,000 sq ft of land, with three villas and a path leading directly to the beach.

The 12,000 sq ft Harbour House suite at Rosewood Hong Kong is the most expensive suite in this year’s Top 100 Suites, at $65,000 a night. On Rosewood’s 57th floor, Harbour House has a stunning view of Hong Kong’s cityscape and Victoria Harbour, that cab ve enjoyed through floor-to-ceiling windows, or better still, from the outdoor pool and wrap-around garden.

But our most expensive suite per sq ft takes us back to the famed Plaza Hotel in New York, and the Grand Penthouse Two-bedroom Terrace Suite. The hotel has been a famous hangout for Hollywood and Broadway’s most famous names for over a century. The decor is reminiscent of an opulent Upper East Side residence, with plush velvet and gold fixtures, as well as a large terrace with views across Central Park.

With 13 of the Top 100 Suites, the US is home to the largest proportion of any country.
