The Whisky Exchange Unveils Hidden Gems with ‘Lost in Time’

These single malts reveal the best of what Speyside was producing at the turn of the 21st century.

By Toby Louch

The Whisky Exchange has revealed its latest series of exclusive bottling single malt Scotch whiskies. Entitled ‘Lost in Time,’ this is a collection of eight single malts that have been hand-selected from the warehouses of both well-known distilleries and hidden gems of Speyside.

A collaboration with the Chivas Brothers, this collection of unique whiskies represents the broad flavor profiles on display throughout Scotland’s Speyside region.

It’s widely understood that across Scotland, countless whisky casks lie maturing, waiting to be chosen at the perfect moment. These eight single malts, which range from 20 to 33 years old, have all been selected at the peak of their maturity. The purpose of ‘Lost in Time’ is to highlight a selection of Speyside whiskies, laid down at the turn of the 21st century.

“These single casks represent a moment in time,” said Chris Bolton, own label and brand product manager at The Whisky Exchange. “Searching for exceptional single malts is not just about finding the right barrels, it’s about selecting a cask at the right moment in maturation, where the spirit character and maturity harmonize, and the distillery’s true style shines through.”

These whiskies come from a key era in the history of whisky making. The early 2000s saw huge growth in demand and production of single malts. The youngest of this collection, the Miltonduff 2003, was selected by Chivas Brothers and The Whisky Exchange as a “particularly fine example of a Miltonduff single malt.” The remaining seven bottles in the collection all predate 1996, heralding a golden era just before the single malt boom.

In the collection, some of Speyside’s biggest names are included, such as The Glenlivet, Longmorn, Glentauchers and Miltonduff. This latest series further establishes The Whisky Exchange’s commitment to provide collectors and connoisseurs alike with some of the finest whiskies available. Two bottles in particular are sure to be popular.

Longmorn 1993

A particular highlight of the ‘Lost in Time’ collection, this single malt was produced a century after Longmorn’s founding in 1993 and matured for 30 years using a second-fill hogshead. Only a light oaky influence has allowed a fruity flavor to develop throughout the maturation, with stewed apples and apricot jam both present. On the nose, notes of cocoa butter and mille-feuille, while the palate sees plum, pear and honeycomb with a touch of sea salt. This bottle is priced at $1585 and has an ABV of 54.5%.

Glenlivet 1990

Potentially the jewel in the crown of this entire collection, the Glenlivet 1990 has certainly spent its 32 years of maturation well. Having spent this time aging in a refill hogshead, this single cask is now bursting with flavors of tropical fruit and lemon tarts. The nose provides notes of shortbread and clay, while the palate brings honeysuckle and mango with a creamy almost savory edge. Only 132 bottles are available, priced at $2,251 with an ABV of 62.4%.
