Shopping

From uptown to downtown you will find luxurious department stores and boutiques.

By Emma Reynolds

New York is one of the world’s fashion capitals, and the city’s many shopping options can be overwhelming. The city is home to several famous department stores, iconic boutiques and specialty shops. Fifth Avenue is undoubtedly one of the most renowned and expensive shopping streets in the world, home to myriad designer boutiques and department stores, like Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.

In New York’s Upper East Side, Madison Avenue is also another hotspot for designer boutiques, from Dolce & Gabbana and Tom Ford to Bottega Veneta and Hermès. Here, you’ll find exquisite high-jewelry boutiques and the latest runway fashions. Make your way downtown to the new Hudson Yards neighborhood is home to luxury real estate, skyscrapers, public spaces, attractions and a massive five-story shopping center, called The Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards, with stores ranging from Zara to Piaget and Chopard. The shopping center has several incredible restaurants, like chef Thomas Keller’s TAK Room, as well as the Vessel, a vertical public park overlooking the Hudson River and a skyscraper that hosts the highest outdoor viewing area in the Western Hemisphere, Edge. You could spend an entire day exploring this cool new neighborhood.

For the ultra-stylish, edgy fashions can be found at Dover Street Market, carrying a curated selection of designer goods from Rick Owens, Balenciaga and Commes des Garçons, to name a few. There’s also a small cafe to get a cup of coffee or fresh green juice while you browse. A few can’t-miss boutiques include Veda, for the perfect leather jacket; Totokaelo for its impressive shoe and skincare collection; MoMA Design Store for unique tech and home decor; ABC Carpet & Home for upscale furniture and elegant carpet and decor; Aime Leon Dore; and more. You can also visit landmark boutiques, like the Tiffany & Co flagship, featured in your favorite films. There’s truly something spectacular around every corner.
