The High Line

An abandoned rail track turned modern 21st-century park.

By Emma

Architect Piet Oudolf breathed new life into an abandoned rail track by turning it into a modern 21st-century park. Now, the park features plenty of verdant greenery and a unique vantage point into some of the city’s most interesting architecture, like The Standard High Line, Whitney Museum, a Zaha Hadid-designed building and more. This urban park features a wooden walkway with plenty of seating and ever-changing and meaningful public art. There are several entrances, from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District up to 34th Street near Hell’s Kitchen. In the summer, there are small business vendors who sell everything from art to artisanal popsicles to gelato. The High Line Food program features high quality, interesting, sustainable and fairly priced fare and is a welcomed respite after a long day of walking. The innovative and creative public seating spaces are sprinkled throughout, whether you want to lay out with a book or simply sit and admire the plants. There are also more than 15 planting zones and 110,000 plants in total along the high line.
