New hotel group Janu has announced the launch of its first hotel, which will open in Tokyo in fall 2023. Like its sister group, Aman, Janu will offer an elevated take on soulful wellness travel but with a more spirited social scene.

Janu has selected Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills – a hotly anticipated ‘modern urban village’ – as the location for its first outpost, with the energy of the managed hub reportedly matching that of the infant hotel brand. Guest experience will be at the heart of the property, with Janu hoping to provide a community-focused environment.

The hotel will be located in the B-2 District Tower, offering 122 guestrooms across 13 floors. Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy – known in particular for his work on Aman New York – each room will be light and spacious with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the views beyond, and some with private balconies.

Exact room details remain sparse, but the top key is set to be the Janu Suite, which will cover an impressive 3,057 sq ft, while the smallest will come in at a still-roomy 592 sq ft.

Like Aman, Janu will put heavy emphasis on wellness facilities. The Tokyo hotel will offer a 43,056-sq-ft spa, making it one of the largest in the city. Guests can expect a contemporary take on traditional wellness, with seven treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy area, an 82-ft lap pool and five movement studios offering yoga, boxing, Pilates and spin classes.

Bidding to become a social hub within the Azabudai Hills complex, the hotel will be home to a mammoth six restaurants, as well as bar, lounge and garden terrace. Of the six, two will be Japanese, one Chinese and another Italian. There will also be a patisserie for sweet treats.

“The development and creation of Janu has been born from Aman Group’s long-term strategic vision, responding to the demand from our wider cohort of guests and the luxury traveler for the hallmarks of the Aman offering in terms of service and excellent design, but with a different pace and spirit,” said Aman and Janu chairman and CEO.

As well as the first Janu hotel, Azabudai Hills will fit into the expansion of the wider Aman brand, with Aman Residences, Tokyo set to open later this year. The development will be home to 91 fully managed homes, ownership of which also grants access to a residents-only spa facility.
