Rosewood to Take Over Three Luxury Lodges in New Zealand

The hotel brand will commence managing the Robertson Lodges from December.

By Irenie Forshaw

Rosewood has announced plans to make its debut in New Zealand, taking over three stunning properties – previously Robertson Lodges – from December.

Philanthropists Julian and Josie Robertson originally opened The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs back in 2001, quickly cementing its reputation as one of the best places to stay in New Zealand.

Later that year the couple opened a second property in Hawke’s Bay on the east coast of the North Island, and, in 2009, began renovating a third lodge in Queenstown on the South Island.

Now, Rosewood has taken over management of all three properties. While the hotel heavyweight promises the “spirit of each property will live on”, you can expect the luxury brand’s signature service and an array of new programs.

“New Zealand’s inspiring natural beauty and warm hospitality have truly captivated us, and we are thrilled to embark on this remarkable journey with Robertson Lodges,” commented Sonia Cheng, chief executive officer of Rosewood Hotel Group.

“It is with great respect and admiration that we seek to honor the Robertson family’s original vision by further elevating the guest experience offered at each resort with Rosewood’s singular approach to ultra-luxury hospitality.”

So, what can you expect from each property? Set within a 6,000-acre coastal estate near the Bay of Islands, Rosewood Kauri Cliffs has access to three pristine private beaches, a sheep and cattle farm, a tranquil forest, and an 18-hole golf course designed by David Harman. The lodge has just 26 rooms and suites, as well as a fitness center and spa.

The second lodge, Rosewood Cape Kidnappers, is situated in Hawke’s Bay – an area best known for its wineries and vibrant food scene. The hilltop property boasts killer ocean views (which can be enjoyed from the Tom Doak-designed golf course) and is home to the largest privately funded restoration project in New Zealand – the Cape Sanctuary.

Finally, on the lower South Island in Queenstown, you’ll find Rosewood Matakauri. The perfect spot for nature lovers, the lakeside retreat is surrounded by the big three peaks – Ceil, Walter Peak and The Remarkables. With just 13 accommodations Matakauri is the most intimate of the three lodges.

“My family and I are delighted to partner with Rosewood Hotels & Resorts to continue the personal style of hotel management our parents put in place when they opened The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs over twenty years ago,” said Jay Robertson.

“This new chapter is an exciting one as we continue to share the quintessential New Zealand experience that Robertson Lodge guests love so much.”
