Dry January is over and to celebrate, we’re mixing up a cocktail or two. This week’s recipe comes from Seventy One – a gin brand pushing boundaries in the luxury space.
Ultra-premium gins are a rarity. The speed at which it can be made and the lack of need for aging compared to the likes of whisky or rum, along with its connotation as a sailor’s drink mean gin’s reputation hasn’t always been a luxurious one.
However, the spirit’s recent surge in popularity has carved a path for innovative gin brands to emerge, offering more refined twists on gin-making. One such brand is Seventy One – a blended gin launched in 2021 that uses a series of complex botanicals to achieve its smooth, heady flavor.

Its standout botanical is the rare Queen of the Night cactus flower, which blooms just once a year and only at night. Seventy One gin rests for precisely 71 nights in a combination of virgin Spanish oak, ex-Pedro Ximenes sherry casks and ex-Cognac casks before its final blending. As a result, unlike classic gins, Seventy One has an intriguing golden hue – a color that is exemplified in its perfume-style bottling.
Created by fashion photographer Mert Alaş – who is more famously known as one half of the Mert and Marcus duo – Seventy One quickly garnered a loyal following among the fashion set and naturally, glamorous drinkers need a glamorous drink.
Seventy One’s signature cocktail is the Golden Martini, which highlights the gin’s rich flavors via zesty grapefruit. Seventy One’s take is a dry martini – you can play with the ratios to fit your own preferences.

Ingredients:
- 70ml Seventy One Gin
- 10ml Dolin Dry Vermouth
- Grapefruit Twist
Method:
Add your martini glass to the freezer, ideally at least an hour before serving (if you’re short on time, you can swirl a few cubes of ice around the glass before serving). Meanwhile, fill a mixing glass with ice and add the gin and vermouth. Stir slowly until chilled (around 20 seconds). Strain into your chilled martini glass and finish with a thin grapefruit skin twist.
