Chef Yoshihiro Murata to Host Dinner at SingleThread

To celebrate Dom Pérignon Vintage 2006 Plénitude 2, Murata will cook in California for the first time.

By Toby Louch

SingleThread, Sonoma, California’s world-renowned three Michelin-starred restaurant continues to attract some of the finest chefs in the world for collaboration dinners. The latest announcement, Chef Yoshihiro Murata of Kikunoi fame is set to cook in California for the first time at a pair of SingleThread dinners in September, inspired by Dom Pérignon’s latest release Vintage 2006 Plénitude 2.

Celebrating the esteemed maison’s latest release – Dom Pérignon Vintage 2006 Plénitude 2 – Murata and his team have devised a pairing menu designed around the new bottle and a selection of other Dom Pérignon vintages. Taking place on Thursday, September 5 and Friday, September 6, the dinner will surround Dom Pérignon’s concept of ‘elevated with time’.

Far more than just a Michelin star chef, Yoshihiro Murata has spent his career as a true stalwart of Japanese cuisine, helping to spread its popularity around the globe and continuing its tradition, while inspiring the next generation of chefs at home.

Murata and SingleThread head chef, Kyle Connaughton’s friendship began in 2006 when Connaughton worked in Murata’s three-star flagship Kyoto restaurant Kikunoi Honten. The pair reconnected in the summer of 2023 at a Dom Pérignon ‘Revelations’ experience in Kyoto. “It was at that moment, we realized the opportunity to reunite for an experience that would complement the refinement, dedication to craft, and tactile expression of Dom Pérignon Plénitude 2 to create a first-of-its-kind gastronomic experience,” said Connaughton.

Chef Murata and his restaurant Kikunoi, champion the majesty of kaiseki cooking, an elevated style of Japanese cuisine where seasonal, local ingredients are heavily utilized to create dishes with a close connection to nature, creating a true sense of place. The parallels are clear between kaiseki cooking and the work undertaken by Connaughton at SingleThread and SingleThread Farm, the 24-acre farm owned by the chef where most of the restaurant’s ingredients are grown.

The two-night-only dinners that will be held at SingleThread celebrate both the lasting friendship between Murata and Connaughton and the new Dom Pérignon release – with added significance since the friendship began in 2006, the same year the champagne was bottled.

“It is truly a pleasure to be working alongside Chef Murata once again, and there are few things I look forward to more than Murata-san’s thoughtful and intentional interpretation of Sonoma County and SingleThread Farm,” said Connaughton. “At SingleThread, we are continuously inspired by kaiseki traditions which emphasize seasonal cooking and the meticulous observation and reflection of the subtleties of nature, and this collaboration will be a true expression of our shared appreciation for nature’s influences, its role as a wellspring of creative inspiration and a shared commitment to elevating a time-honored craft in the same path as a Dom Pérignon Plénitude 2.”
