The Restaurant
Otagi, nestled at the foot of Kyoto's northern mountains, offers a refined dining experience that honors its locale. Chef Kazuaki Baba built his restaurant on his grandmother's land, a testament to his devotion to his hometown, once known as Otagi. The restaurant currently holds two Michelin stars, a recognition it earned shortly after opening. Baba champions local produce, sourcing generous amounts of vegetables from childhood friends who farm nearby. The setting is serene, a deliberate escape from the city's clamor. Upon entering past the *noren*-curtained doorway, guests discover a rock garden and courtyard, with stone steps leading to a modern counter. Inside, the design features rounded corners, creating a smooth aesthetic complemented by warm lighting. While rooted in Japanese culinary tradition, Otagi embraces subtle innovation. The tasting menu culminates in a hashed beef with rice, a dish that, despite its Western appearance, incorporates strictly Japanese ingredients such as dried bonito *dashi*, sake, sugar, and miso.
