Burberry Reopens East 57th Street New York Flagship Store

The refreshed location looks to blend modern British luxury with Burberry’s impressive heritage.

By Toby Louch

Iconic British luxury fashion house Burberry has just reopened its flagship store on New York’s East 57th Street following a renovation. This refreshed store includes collaborations with British artists, bespoke features and hints of London’s architecture, bringing a little Britishness to Manhattan’s busy streets. The store looks set to provide a modern example of British luxury, while also leaning into Burberry’s historic past.

Having first opened back in 1978, Burberry’s flagship New York store remains a stalwart of this city’s luxury scene. Today it occupies an expansive space, spread out across three floors. Vast oversized windows flood the store with light while also ensuring New York City remains an ever-present part of the environment. Those visiting will notice natural stone touches that have been inspired by British limestone, in addition to the classic railings that can be seen right across London.

In recent years, Burberry has begun to lean into its British heritage a little more, back in 2023, it reverted its logo to the original Equestrian Knight Design that dates back to 1901. This nod to heritage can be spotted throughout the new New York flagship store, where customers can relax on Chesterfield sofas while iconic Burberry designs adorn the walls. Those attending client appointments will be treated to a classic British tea service, featuring tableware designed by David Mellor.

In the past, Burberry has both celebrated and supported artists, this continues in the New York flagship store that includes hand-tufted textile installations from Tom Atton Moore. These pieces are utilized as a backdrop for Burberry’s outerwear and shoes, many of which feature as part of the latest campaign, ‘It’s Always Burberry Weather’.

The store is also home to several archival pieces, like replicas of the gabardine garments worn by British–Irish explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton – famed for his disastrous Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914 – 1917 – in addition to replicas of First and Second World War trench coats. Besides these replicas of historic pieces, visitors will discover new season pieces that have been manufactured in Burberry’s Castleford factory in Yorkshire. Shoppers are able to scan QR codes, which provide customers with more details on the brand’s history.

The new Burberry New York flagship store is also set to debut a made-to-order service for the classic Castleford trench, allowing customers to select either leather or suede in colors that have been inspired by British landscapes.

The reopening of this flagship East 57th Street New York store brings Burberrys presence in the US to 50 separate stores.
