Legendary British manufacturer Rolls-Royce has just pulled the cloth off a never-before-seen bespoke iteration of the Spectre, the Spectre Lunaflair, which has been specially commissioned by a United States-based client. Already a sensational motor car, this unique variant of the Spectre takes things a step further with a showstopping holographic paint finish that creates a rainbow effect.
The Spectre Lunaflair takes its name from a naturally occurring optical phenomenon known as a lunar halo, which is essentially a colorful circle of light that appears around the moon. This occurs when light from the moon passes through the ice crystals that appear in high-altitude cirrus clouds. These crystals act as minute prisms, refracting the light and causing the rainbow effect.
To recreate this effect in the paintwork of the Spectre Lunaflair, Rolls-Royce spent over a year, experimenting with paint chemistry, application timing and the base coat. The final finish of the Spectre Lunaflair involves seven layers of lacquer, one of which is a specially formulated pearlescent coat, infused with fine flakes of both magnesium fluoride and aluminum. The end result is a vehicle that is adorned with a deep metallic effect in low light, but shines in a rainbow technicolor under bright light.

“We are constantly astounded by the diversity of ideas that inform our clients’ bespoke concepts, which frequently draw inspiration from materials, finishes and themes they see in other commissions,” said head of bespoke design at Rolls-Royce, Martina Starke. “Spectre Lunaflair is the perfect example of this, exploring the ethereal beauty of a lunar halo and sparked by the client after witnessing a paint finish on another bespoke motor car. This symbiotic relationship and cross-pollination of ideas is fostering a virtuous circle of innovation and creativity, which is incredibly important to our team of bespoke designers, as we focus on delivering unparalleled value to those who entrust us with their vision.”
The car that partly inspired the owner of the Spectre Lunaflair was 2023’s one-of-one Phantom Syntopia. This vehicle featured a dark iridescent liquid noir finish that was also infused with color-shifting pigment. The US client of the Spectre Lunaflair contacted the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective to create a similar concept inspired by the lunar halo.

In addition to the dazzling paintwork, the interior of the Spectre Lunaflair is also entirely bespoke, utilizing navy blue, white and peony pink tones, all of which can be identified during a lunar halo. The theme continues to the vehicle’s steering wheel, finished in a dual-tone navy outer and arctic white inner.
As a bespoke commission, only a single Spectre Lunaflair will ever be produced, is Lunaflair paint finish is also reserved exclusively for the commissioning client.
