Private Island andBeyond Mnemba Reopens after Refurbishment

The island spans less than a mile and is inhabited solely by andBeyond guests and the dedicated resort staff.

By Grace Taylor

Boasting crystal clear calm waters, stunning coral reefs and bright white sand, Zanzibar has become widely renowned for its paradise-like charm. And where better to fall in love with the peaceful waters of the Indian Ocean than on a private island

When it comes to dream-like paradise destinations, Zanzibar’s andBeyond Mnemba Island is in a league of its own. Tucked off the northeastern coast of Zanzibar, Mnemba Island is less than a mile across and is inhabited solely by andBeyond guests and the dedicated resort staff, who cater to the hotel’s 12 beachside bandas (traditional style-private cottages). Recently transformed through a complete refurbishment by long-time andBeyond collaborators Fox Browne Creative and Nicholas Plewman Architects, this secluded haven is now more enchanting than ever, pairing tropical beauty with upgraded luxury.

Each of the resort’s 12 private bandas features an architectural twist inspired by the nautilus shell, wrapping the bedroom and bathroom in soft, spiral curves. Since being refurbished, these beachside cottages have been expanded and upgraded, embracing a more sophisticated look while also preserving their rustic charm and traditional style. The refreshed bandas now boast private beach lounges, with a day bed, sun loungers and an al fresco shower, alongside two entrances for added privacy. Each banda also includes a personal butler, who is always on hand to with a tray of sushi or a chilled glass of champagne.

The ocean theme carries into the banda’s interiors, each decorated with locally sourced brass, marble and ceramic accents that complement Omani antiques. The renewed structure incorporates coral stone and traditional Lamu plaster, and louvered blinds give the guests the option to relax into the refreshing sea breeze. For families, the renovation has introduced a thoughtfully designed Family Banda. With an adjoining room, it’s ideal for those bringing little ones along for the adventure.

Once you’re ready to venture beyond your private oasis, the lodge’s main guest area has also been reimagined. Now boasting ocean views to rival any postcard, it offers indoor-outdoor dining and a lively bar perfect for a barefoot sunset cocktail. Dine alfresco with your toes in the sand, or settle in the inner courtyard for a torch-lit Swahili feast under the stars. For a relaxing afternoon, the new Wellness Banda offers guests two treatment rooms that open out onto the island forest, as well as an outdoor yoga platform for sunrise or sunset sessions, sound treatments and meditation.

As with any other andBeyond resort, the focus on the vibrant tapestry of local culture doesn’t stop at the hotel’s interiors. All andBeyond properties pride themselves on being serious about conservation, and this commitment is reflected in the resort’s recent upgrades. The new discovery center invites guests to learn about Oceans Without Borders, a conservation initiative run in collaboration with Wild Impact. Here, marine biologists and dive masters lead guests through the island’s underwater wonders, from coral nurseries to artificial reefs. If you’re feeling adventurous, join them on a dive and submit sightings to Beyond Sightings, a crowdsourced database of marine life.
